Skytrax names Changi Airport in Singapore best in the world for sixth consecutive year

One of the world’s busiest terminals, Singapore International Changi Airport has been voted the best airport in the planet once more this year. This is the sixth consecutive time the airport has occupied the first place in traveller’s preferences, after it was awarded the top spot in 2013. Changi receives approximately 60 million passengers every year and 7,200 airplanes each week.

The distinction came from Skytrax, a UK–based consultancy specialising in air travel reviews and rankings. The consultancy conducted an international survey using the opinion of almost 14 million passengers from 100 different countries to obtain the results for 2018 best airport. In order to provide accurate information to clients, Skytrax conducts research for commercial airlines, and takes surveys from international travellers to rate cabin staff, airports, airlines, airline lounges, in-flight entertainment, on-board catering, and several other elements of air travel.

The results were based on travellers’ level of satisfaction and took 39 aspects into account; from security, migration office, quality of services, connections, shopping options to details like cleanliness, restaurant prices, availability of electric chargers and silent areas. Not only did Changi receive top marks in almost every category, but the airport itself can be considered an attraction thanks to its distinguished and unique features that make it more than just a crossing point.

Luxury

Changi Airport looks more like a lavish shopping centre, boasting over 350 sophisticated retail venues. In addition to its four terminals, Changi is home to JetQuay terminal. Complete with showers and nap rooms, this terminal is exclusively used by customers that travel on private jets. Another charming detail is the airport’s soft scent of orchid tea leaves, which usually imprints good memories upon passengers.

Art

Passengers are also marvelled by the beautiful display of kinetic art that can be found across the four terminals. Some of the most popular pieces are “Kinetic Rain” (bronze raindrops that fall various shapes) and “A million times” (a wall decorated with 504 clocks that tick in a synchronised manner).

Attractions

Changi Airport caters to its passengers with its very own cinema, a games room and several spas. Other attractions comprise a four-storey water slide, a beautiful garden filled with local plants and over 100 cactus species, and a 9-metre-high interactive facility where travellers can take pictures and display them on 64 screens.

Plans for the future

By 2019, Changi Airport plans to launch the Jewel Changi, a new terminal, which will increase its capacity to 85 million passengers per year. The upcoming space is expected to resemble an indoor forest and will include its own steam clouds and a 40-metre-high waterfall, where amazing light shows will be projected.
