The Datai Langkawi resort gets a £40 million makeover

Renowned luxury Malaysian resort The Datai Langkawi has unveiled its new look ahead of its official reopening in July 2018. The boutique beach hotel on the tropical island of Langkawi is currently undergoing a complete revamp taking 10 months and costing around £40 million pounds.

According to The Datai Langkawi, it is the most substantial enhancement since the resort's inception nearly 25 years ago. The project is being led by Didier Lefort of award-winning Paris-based design studio DL2A, who along with visionary Australian architect Kerry Hill, was responsible for the original resort designs that won the Aga Khan award at launch in 1993.

Lefort brings an unrivalled knowledge of the estate, its structure, history and unique surroundings, along with a deep connection to the original vision of a luxurious retreat seamlessly integrated into the 10 million-year-old virgin rainforest, and the much-feted beach at Datai Bay.

The works include a remodelling of the resort’s landscaping, main lobby and the interiors of the guestrooms, suites, villas and public areas including new lighting, a warm colour palette and the latest technology. Work is underway on expanding The Pavilion and The Dining Room restaurants, a refreshed retail space, and a fitness centre located by the beach.

A new Nature Centre inspired by Malaysian tribal longhouses is also being added to the resort, which will have a dedicated on-site naturalist and marine biologist to conduct research, carry out conservation, and guide and educate visitors. It will house a library as well as a tea corner offering a range of wild traditional Malay tisanes beneficial to health, allowing guests to explore the therapeutic and medicinal properties of widely used local herbs.

The resort’s luxurious Datai Spa will also be expanded with additional spa pavilions, a new air-conditioned treatment room, and a dedicated manicure and pedicure studio.

Three popular Rainforest Pool Villas have been added to the resort’s existing five, all located along the Datai River that runs through the rainforest, featuring a deck and pool overlooking the clear water. A new five-bedroom Datai Estate villa has also been added to the resort and will be one of the largest of its kind in Asia, comprising spacious living rooms, games rooms, 24-hour butler service and a private chef.

The Datai’s general manager Arnaud Girodon said:

“We have a duty to preserve the legacy of this extraordinary resort and the time was right for a major refurbishment, over two decades since it was built.”

He added:

“We are confident the new incarnation of The Datai Langkawi will broaden its appeal across continents and generations whilst delighting our loyal repeat guests, many of whom see this as a second home. We are now ready to embark on a new chapter for The Datai Langkawi and are looking forward to the journey.”
