The Independent reports top activities to enjoy in Jordan

From taking yoga lessons amidst a sandy landscape to observing a sky full of stars from a Bedouin campsite, Jordan offers some of the most unique holiday experiences in the Middle East. During her trip to the Hashemite Kingdom, travel blogger and writer Emma Thomson, from renowned UK newspaper The Independent, explored some of the most enchanting sites within the Arabian destination. In a recent article, Thomson gushed about her experience and listed some of the top activities for adventurous holidaymakers during a visit to Jordan.

Surrounded by Syria, Israel, Iraq and Saudi Arabia, Jordan is an oasis of tranquillity in the middle of a not so peaceful region. Nonetheless, this destination is safe and easy to enter and boasts stunning natural sites from the heights of golden desert dunes to the depths of the Dead Sea.

Yoga Lessons in sandy Little Petra

A truly striking destination to connect with your inner peace, the sandy landscape of Little Petra is an exceptional setting for a yoga lesson. Visitors can align body and soul whilst gazing at the orange hues of the horizon and listening to the distant noises of goats and the imam’s evening call to prayer that echoes from the village mosque.

Horse meditation

Growing in popularity throughout the world, horse meditation is a version of equine-assisted therapy. Jordan offers this experience and allows stressed travellers to connect with these beautiful creatures, which respond to your inner feelings and are said to help to heal subconscious behaviour.

A galaxy of stars in Wadi Rum

Known as the “Valley of the Moon”, Wadi Rum is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre situated in Petra. Visitors can observe the immensity of the starry sky above within the Wadi Rum Luxury Camp, by staying inside a see-through ensuite bubble dome. Stare at the galaxy from the comfort of your bed within the dome as covers are peeled back to reveal 360-degree views of the night sky.

Learning Bedouin traditions

Travellers can also learn about the habits of the nomadic Bedouin people by staying with a local desert-dwelling family during their visit. Bedouins will teach you desert survival skills, instruct you on how to identify which plants can be used as lipsticks or soap and how to herd goats.

Cycling between seas

The most adventurous and athletic can sign up for a challenging nine-day cycling journey that takes them between two seas: from the Dead Sea – the lowest point on earth – to the Red Sea in the south. Throughout the cycling journey, observe canyons, Crusader fortresses and the red city of Petra.

Spotting widlife at Wadi Mujib

Get to explore the world’s lowest nature reserve at Wadi Mujib. This stunning canyon is believed to be the biblical River Arnon and an important water stopover for migratory birds. Catch a glimpse of the beautiful avifauna and even spot a Syrian wolf or Nubian ibex if you’re lucky.
