Thailand welcomed one million UK tourists in 2016

After receiving a record-breaking number of one million UK visitors in 2016, Thailand has much to celebrate indeed. Reaching this long-established goal marks an incredible milestone for this enchanting Far Eastern destination that's so popular among British travellers. A total 1,004,669 UK visitors made it to Thailand in 2016 and the country ready to welcome an even bigger figure this 2017.

Thailand welcomed one million UK tourists in 2016

With over 16 million of visitors each year, Thailand is a very popular destination indeed. But now, it has even more reason to celebrate as one million of those annual arrivals are of British origin, which means that Thailand has finally smashed a target it had long been aiming to achieve.

According to newly released data by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), a total 1,004,669 British travellers made Thailand their destination in 2016, significantly contributing to the Asian country's tourism growth last year. As published by the same source, Thailand grew by 6.03% as a destination in 2016 and is keen to celebrate such fruitful results.

A release sent to The Holiday Place from the TAT London team read:

"We have achieved this by promoting Thailand in the most positive light despite any obstacle and with our partnerships from tour operators, the hard work of our friends in the trade and endless support from the hotels, DMCs and airlines (Friends of Thailand Club). Thank you to all of those who have promoted Thailand to achieve this incredible result."

This remarkable success comes in the face of adversity and despite the negative impact that some events in the past year could have had potential visitors, such as death of Thailand's ruler, HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the subsequent one-year-long mourning period declared.

But it seems holidaymakers' spirits were not dampened by this or any other negative aspect of a Thailand holiday, as they continued arriving in big numbers to close the year on a very high note indeed.

According to an article published on Bangkok Post's Business section, international tourist arrivals to Thailand this year have already reached (and surpassed) the 10 million mark, signalling to a 1.9 % increase on year-on-year figures. At the same time, and ahead of the celebration of Thailand's World Travel Tourism Council Global Summit, with took place from 25th to 27th April, tourism revenue for the year to date had also grown a whopping 4.3 % with a total 559 billion bhat recorded, as revealed by Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul:

"The tourism business has continued to grow in both arrivals and revenue, and this will be used to draw more foreign investors to spend on this sector in Thailand."

On this hopeful note, Thailand is already rubbing hands and looking ahead at what future successes 2017 may continue to bring to the Far Eastern destination that everyone's so obsessed with, especially Britons!
