A brand new boutique resort has opened in the countryside in Nicaragua, which caters for travellers who love the outdoors and an active lifestyle. Nekupe Sporting Resort and Retreat has eight, suites and villas, and is located within a 1,300-acre nature reserve, 30 minutes from the historic town of Granada.
The hotel’s individual accommodation options are accessible via a luxury ATV. There’s the La Residencia de Dona Theresita, which sits on the top of a hill and boasts views looking out across the Mombacho Volcano. The residence has two grand suites measuring 1,300 square feet, a 1,900-square-foot decking area that has an infinity plunge pool, plus two other 870-square-foot suites, a full kitchen and a recreational swimming pool. There are also four villas that boast between 700 and 1,000 square feet of space, and each offer an open terrace, and floor-to-ceiling windows with views that look out over the countryside.
Nekupe Sporting Resort and Retreat was established by Nicaraguan philanthropists Don Alfredo Pellas and Doña Theresita Pellas, to attract travellers who are committed to nature and wellness. The resort was built around their respect for the environment, and the sanctuary was created by reforesting more than 14,000 trees, building water reservoirs, and protecting the local wildlife.
Don Alfredo Pellas, co-owner of the resort, explained:
“Nekupe, which means ‘heaven’ in Chorotega – the indigenous language of a native tribe in Nicaragua, has been a true passion to bring to life, driven by the love for our country, its breathtakingly raw beauty, cultural heritage and kind people,”
“We are excited to see Nekupe and Nicaragua evolve into destinations where guests will reconnect with nature and each other through relaxing and invigorating experiences.”
The central lobby of the resort, Casa Club, features airy living and lounge areas where guests can enjoy cocktails or coffee. The 10,800-square-foot space also houses Don Alfredo’s restaurant, a gift shop, and pool court with panoramic views of the lush landscapes and the soaring Mombacho Volcano. The restaurant features fresh dishes created by Doña Theresita, with ingredients sourced from the onsite garden. The chef can customise dishes to suit individual needs, and there’s an outdoor table and exhibition kitchen which is used for cooking classes and private dinners. There is also a wide selection of hand-crafted cocktails, cigars, and rum tastings.
Centred on wellness and embracing the outdoors and nature, the resort has a large yoga deck with views of the Concepcion and Maderas Volcanos where guests can practise meditation. The Nekupe Spa is set within lush grounds and offers native treatments using local, natural ingredients, all within a tranquil outdoor setting.
There’s also the Chapel San Francisco de Asis, which is perched on one of the nature reserve’s highest points, and surrounded by fragrant trees. There’s a customised Italian bell, and a fountain that streams water to the baptistery. Guests can get married, be baptised, or meditate in the peaceful space.
