Sandals Resorts to bring 222 new rooms and 900 jobs to Dover Beach, Barbados

Sandals Resorts International has announced it will add another 222 rooms to the Sandals Barbados Dover Beach Hotel in the Caribbean. The new additions will bring the property’s total of guest rooms and suites to 502.

The expansion project is called “Phase II” and will include new accommodation, seven new swimming pools, five restaurants, a spa and wellness sanctuary, an entertainment pavilion with a main stage, and a conference and meeting facility spanning 10,500 square feet.

Ground was broken on the construction work at the Barbados resort earlier this year. Ferry Zievinger, General Manager of Sandals Dover Beach, detailed:

“If you look at it, it’s quite a large expansion. The resort is built on seven acres of land and we’re adding 14 acres to that. This will give us more space in terms of landscaping; and it gives the resort more quiet areas where people can relax.”

The development project is expected to bring US$150 million to the economy in Barbados, and new jobs are being created in the areas as a result of the expansion. The project is expected to be completed by November, 2017.

Jeremy Jones, Director Corporate Services at Sandals Resorts International, commented:

“An additional 600 persons are going to be employed at the opening phase and then that will also be a function of what the occupancy is going to be like moving forward.”

Mr jones also explained:

“So once you have the full capacity in excess of 500 rooms you’re going to be looking at close to 900 [new] staff.”

The hotel has been open for just two years and the expansion project was planned to keep up with demand following excellent occupancy levels. The Minister of Tourism for Barbados Richard Sealy, said that Sandals Barbados has accounted for at least 20,000 of the 590,000 visitors to Barbados in 2015.

Located on the south side of the island on the former Couples Resort in St Lawrence, Sandals Barbados has accommodation in three categories: Ocean Village, Crystal Lagoon Village and Caribbean Village. Guests can choose from luxurious options such as butler suites and swim-up river suites. Existing facilities at the all-inclusive hotel include a state-of-the-art fitness centre, an amphitheatre that overlooks the white sand beach, and the exclusive Red Lane Spa with six treatment rooms and a plethora of pampering spa therapies.
