Phum Baitang hotel in Cambodia resembles a traditional Khmer village

Cambodia has often been a place for backpackers as they traverse their way through South East Asia, but now more travellers are seeking luxury experiences during their visit, and as a result, more upscale hotels are being developed. One of these incudes the five-star Phum Baitang hotel on the outskirts of Siem Reap.

Located in the countryside just outside the capital, Phum Baitang resembles a traditional Khmer Village, with 45 thatched villas elevated on stilts, and surrounded by eight acres of verdant paddy fields and lemongrass gardens. The wooden villas have been built from local materials including aged wood and stone, and have open plan interiors.

There are 25 villas with private furnished terraces and 20 with private plunge pools, and all have gardens. Modern amenities include wireless internet, minibars, phones, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, music docking stations, in-room safes, and bathrooms with large freestanding tubs. The villas have been decorated in earthy colours, and feature handmade wooden furnishings, antiques, and hanging lanterns.

The hotel has two restaurants: Bay Phsar that serves traditional Cambodian dishes using rice from its very own paddy fields, and has views overlooking the paddy fields and gardens, and Hang Bay, a dining outlet that specialises in international culinary delights including, wood-fired pizzas, steaks, and fresh seafood. Guests can unwind with drinks in the sunshine at the Pool Bar, or sit back in rattan wing chairs in the Cigar and Cocktail Lounge in a100-year-old farmhouse, and choose from a wide range of wines and cocktails.

Facilities at Phum Baitang include an infinity swimming pool; a boutique with exclusive products including clothes and handmade gifts; and the Spa Temple, with five single and two double treatment rooms, a sauna, a steam room, a yoga pavilion and a modern fitness centre, as well an array of pampering therapies that use old healing techniques.

Younger guests can enjoy fun activities at the supervised Kids Club, with arts and crafts, puzzle games, water activities and cooking classes. There are also cooking classes for adults where the hotel’s chef will take guests to the local market to pick ingredients and he’ll teach them how to make three traditional Khmer meals.

Phum Baitang is located close to wide range of attractions and guests can book excursions and tours with the concierge. Phnom Kulen National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Phnom Kulen Mountain, thousand-year-old carvings, rivers, and rainforest, while Tonle Sap Lake is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake and is thriving with diverse fish, birds, reptiles and animals.

Holidaymakers can visit Phsar Chas, the oldest market in Siem Reap, and browse the many stalls under the French old colonial buildings. Cambodia’s most famous attractions Angkor Archaeological Park boasts more than 400,000 square kilometres of land and is home to the remains of buildings, temples and cities from the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th Century. Visitors can explore the temples of Angkor Wat, Bayon, Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, and neighbouring villages of this UNESCO site.
