After being nominated 31 times in 22 categories of the World Travel Awards, Ecuador won eight awards at the recent South America Gala Ceremony. The prestigious World Travel Awards Latin America Gala Ceremony 2016 took place earlier this month showcasing the best of the region’s travel, tourism and hospitality industry. With 31 nominations across 22 categories, Ecuador was one of the big winners of the event, scooping eight awards.
Ecuador won the title of the Greenest Destination in South America for the third year in a row. The country has also been named as the World’s Greenest Destination for the past three years, an accolade that it has been nominated again for the World Travel Awards Grand Final Ceremony later this year.
Ecuador’s capital Quito was named as South America’s Leading Destination, and its Mariscal Sucre International Airport won the title of South America’s Leading Airport. Hotel Plaza Grande Quito was named as the Leading Boutique Hotel in South America, while Finch Bay Eco Hotel won the award for South America’s Leading Green Hotel. The title for Leading Luxury Train in South American was awarded to Tren Crucero, a series of electric-diesel, and restored, antique steam locomotives that take passengers on journeys across Ecuador, from the Pacific Coast to the beautiful Andes.
The business and conference sector in Ecuador was also recognised at the ceremony, and Swissotel Quito was awarded as South America’s Leading Conference Hotel. The country’s largest city Guayaquil was named as South America’s Leading Business Travel Destination.
The WTA South America Ceremony was held at Swissotel Lima in Peru and was attended by hundreds of representatives from the region’s leading tourism and hospitality sectors, as well as government officials and leaders. Winners from the South America Ceremony will go on to the Grand Final Gala event that will take place in December, 2016 at the Olhuveli Beach & Spa Resort in the Maldives. The ceremony will host finalists from the world’s regional ceremonies and will declare the world’s winners in the travel industry.
