Ecuador's Quito hailed as the best holiday destination in Latin America
For the fourth consecutive year Quito, Ecuador has been crowned the best holiday destination in Latin America at the 2016 World Travel Awards Latin America. Ecuador's capital city took the top spot over a number of popular holiday destinations including Galapagos Islands, Lima and Sao Paulo.
The results are in from the World Travel Awards (WTA) Latin America 2016 and for the fourth consecutive year Quito, Ecuador has been named as the best holiday destination in Latin America. Quito once again bested other popular destinations including Buenos Aires, Galapagos Islands, Lima and Sao Paulo. Many would agree that Quito’s successful run at the WTA Latin America is owed to the combination of its rich history and the city’s natural beauty.
Quito, which sits on ruins of an ancient Inca city, was the first location to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved historic centres in Latin America. In addition to the historic significance of the city; tropical rainforests, cloud forests, lakes, lagoons and volcanoes are just a short distance away from Quito making it all the more appealing with something to offer every type of traveller.
Since 2015, Latin America’s tourism industry has been having its moment in the sun. Recent studies suggest that the number of travellers visiting the region with increase faster than for Europe. In 2015, tourism revenue across Latin America was at $371 billion; this figure is expected to increase to as much as $535 billion by the year 2026. Investors and holidaymakers alike are taking notice of what the region has to offer.
Ecuador has been placing an increased emphasis on its tourism portfolio with 1,560,429 foreign travellers visiting the country in 2015 resulting in a 13.7 per cent increase income when compared to 2014. In addition to crowning the top holiday destinations, the awards also seeks to recognize the region’s top performers in the airline and hotel industries including the Hotel Plaza Grande Quito in Ecuador which was named the leading boutique hotel.
Other destinations like Cuba are also holding great promise for the region while one of Latin America’s more established holiday destinations- Mexico is attempting to reinvent its image with the current campaign “The Place You Thought You Knew” seeking to market Mexico as more than just an all inclusive hotspot.
This year’s annual WTA Latin America took place in Lima, Peru with this being the 23rd instalment of the event. Other winners included Medellin, Columbia for the leading city break destination in Latin America, Lima, Peru for the region’s top culinary destination, Chile for the best adventure travel and Argentina, which took home the award for the leading cultural destination.
