Samana in Dominican Republic records growth in tourism
The Samana region in the Dominican Republic has experienced an increase in visitor arrivals, according to tourism industry experts. Speaking at the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange conference recently, the experts said that they expect a visitor increase of 5.5 per cent in 2016, as more travellers head to the region to surround themselves in the natural surroundings.
Samana in the Dominican Republic is becoming an increasingly-popular tourist destination, according to tourism industry experts. Representatives of the Association of Hotels and Tourism Companies of Samana (AHETSA) recently spoke at the Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange conference, saying that there has been a growth in tourism through the local El Catey International Airport (AZS).
Samana records approximately 57,000 visitors a year, and tourism professionals are expecting a 5.5 per cent increase in visitors to the region in 2016 as travellers head to the region to soak up the magnificent natural beauty. Located on a peninsula on the north-eastern coast of the Dominican Republic, Samana has become more accessible to travellers due to its highway that connects it to many destinations in the country in just two hours.
The country’s infrastructure development officials are looking into constructing a new port that will connect Sabana de la Mar to the peninsula of Samana by ferry. A total of 1,000 new hotel rooms will be added to the region’s existing 3,650 by 2017, and another 1,000 rooms are expected between 2017 and 2018. Officials are keen to ensure that the hotels have the lowest impact on the environment, and green practices must be followed, including the use of solar power, green-certified cleaning services, locally sourced construction materials, and locally grown organic foods that will be used in restaurants.
Amhsa Marina hotel has announced it will develop the five-star, 386-room Kaaeni Beach Hotel, costing $50 million. Kaaeni is expected to open to guests in September, 2017 and it will be the largest luxury hotel in the Las Galeras area of Samana.
During the conference, representatives of Dominican Republic hotels said that the country is expecting a tourism growth of 5.8 per cent in 2016, with a visitor arrivals expecting to reach six million by the end of the year.
