The U.S network CNN has named the Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel and Spa as one of the Top Ten Hotels in the World.

The upscale hotel in Grenada in the Caribbean was ranked in ninth place in the "Best Hotel in the World" category, joining luxurious properties such as Le Manoir au Quat' Saisons in the UK, Umaid Bhawan Palace in India, and Mirihi Island in the Maldives.

Leading travel site TripAdvisor also voted the Calabash in second place in the list of the "Top 25 Hotels in the Caribbean". Just one per cent of hotels on TripAdvisor are awarded with this accolade.

"To be named one of the top hotels in the world is every hotelier's dream. We are overwhelmed to be placed in these categories with such outstanding hotels and are so proud that Calabash has the ability to stand up there with the best of them."

Stated Adele Garbutt, the Director of Sales and Marketing at Calabash. She continued:

"These awards are for our staff and are a testament to what we do here at Calabash."

The luxury hotel closed in 2014 for an extensive refurbishment programme that saw the renovation of its accommodation, including new Pool Suites, and the addition of a new Wellness Centre.

Calabash received Green Globe Certification for its environmental efforts and practices, such as energy efficient air conditioning units, the hotel's freezer system and water treatment facilities that recycle water and irrigate the tropical gardens.

Guests can also get involved in programmes, such as Pack for a Purpose, where they are asked to save some space in their suitcases for items to donate to the island's children's homes.

Grenada is known as the "Island of Spice", due to its history as a leading producer of spices such as Cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, allspice, orange/citrus peels, wild coffee, nutmeg and organic cocoa.

Tourists can explore the island's diverse and historic attractions including the Grenada National Museum, Fort George and Fort Frederick, West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre, River Antoine Rum Distillery, the oldest rum distillery in the western hemisphere, and the, the oldest spice plantation on the island, Dougladston Estate.
