The Holiday Place invited to Mexico event highlighting Mexico City

Yesterday The Holiday Place was delighted to be invited by the Mexican Travel Agents Association of Mexico City (AMAV DF) for a breakfast at Hilton Hotel Park Lane, London, to discover the latest developments and main attractions that Mexico City has to offer. Our main finding there was the project currently underway for the development of a new cutting-edge airport, the likes of which hasn't been seen anywhere in the world.

The Holiday Place invited to Mexico event highlighting Mexico City

A team from The Holiday Place recently attended a special Mexican morning put together by Mexico City promoters with the goal of showcasing the many attractions of the large Mexican capital and bringing to the spotlight.

The hope is ultimately to raise awareness among UK holidaymakers and position it as the ideal history and culture-rich destination that can be easily combined with the stereotypical sun and sea holidays in the coveted Mexican Caribbean, namely Cancun.

As our team (made up of Product Manager, Parul Jadav and Marketing Manager, Anna Vine) learnt during the insightful event, Mexico City boasts wealth of activities and charms; a stroll through the city will reveal the Mexican capital’s history – with its Hispanic foundations, colonial era and now its contemporary approach. With Mayan pyramids in the heart of the city, a park five times the size of New York’s Central Park, almost as many museums as London and ancient canal networks, this city makes the perfect accompaniment to a beach stay on the Riviera Maya, just a short flight away.

The big news we were updated on is the construction of a new airport that will be built for 2020 to replace the current Mexico City International Airport. Designed by a collaboration between British Lord Norman Foster and Mexican architect Fernando Romero, this is set to be one of the world’s largest airports at 470,000 square metres. It is also stated to be the world’s most sustainable, with the structure collecting its own water and energy. It will ensure short walking distances and few level changes making it extremely easy for passengers to navigate.

Lord Foster said of the ambitious development plans for Mexico City’s newest airport:

“Stansted Airport’s reinvention of the conventional terminal in the 1990s was emulated worldwide – this breaks with that model for the first time. It pioneers a new concept for a large-span, single airport enclosure, which will achieve new levels of efficiency and flexibility – and it will be beautiful.

"The experience for passengers will be unique. Its design provides the most flexible enclosure possible to accommodate internal change and an increase in capacity. Mexico has really seized the initiative in investing in its national airport, understanding its social and economic importance and planning for the future. There will be nothing else like it in the world.”

This news follow other recent one likes Ritz-Carlton opening their first ever hotel property in the Mexican capital, with an official opening date expected to take place sometime in 2019 or the nationwide Mexican festivities and celebrations being organised all over the UK and Mexico (most prominently in London and Mexico City) simultaneously in order to mark "The Dual Year: The Year of Mexico in the UK and The Year of the UK in Mexico".

2015 has been chosen as the year to celebrate both cultures in both sides of the pond and thanks to the efforts of embassies and tourist boards working from both ends of the spectrum, it has achieved great success in spreading the word about Mexico's enormous appeal as a varied and diverse travel destination.

The Holiday Place is fully onboard with Mexico's efforts and have worked together this year in order to further promote the destination, from covering various Mexico-related events organised throughout London to launching a joint advertising campaign now featuring on London's popular underground tube stations of Liverpool Street, Bank, Statford, Canary Wharf and London Bridge.
