New real snow ski centre planned for Muscat, Oman

One of the world’s hottest countries will be home to a brand new ski centre with real snow to boost tourism.

The Snow Village will be built in the Palm Mall shopping centre and entertainment complex in Muscat in Oman and is set to cost approximately £2 million (12million Omani Rial).

Full details of the new snow dome have not yet been released but there will be skiing and snowboarding facilities and a range of other winter activities such as ice skating and curling.

The ski centre is being built by Unlimited Snow after an agreement was signed by the owners of Palm Mall, the Tamani Global Company, who are working with the Dutch Al Jarwani Group.

Speaking about the project, Shaikh Mahmoud bin Mohammed Jarwani, the chairman of the Tamani Global Company, said the firm chooses to develop unique and distinct projects. The project will help increase tourism in Oman and will encourage travellers to book sun and ski holidays.

The Palm Mall is under construction and is costing approximately £15 million. The development is scheduled to be completed by early 2017 and will include a 12-screen cinema complex, a luxury hotel, and an aquarium.

The unique ski centre will be the second to open in the Middle East. The Dubai Snow Centre opened in 2005 and is located in the neighbouring United Arab Emirates. The centre features a 400-metre slope with a 60-metre vertical, and five runs that suit different levels of ability.

The Sultanate of Oman is home to a myriad of stunning landscapes including sweeping sandy beaches and huge sand dunes, soaring mountain ranges, crystal clear turquoise ocean waters and rugged coastline.

Holidaymakers can walk miles along the beaches and coastline in Muscat or they can explore the capital’s historic sites and tourist attractions such as the Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani forts, Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Bait az-Zubair Museum and the Qurum National Park.
