Galley Bay Resort & Spa opens new Turtle Sanctuary in Antigua

The Galley Bay Resort & Spa has introduced a group of new guests to its luxury grounds with the opening of a brand new Turtle Sanctuary.

The luxury resort on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean created the new sanctuary using local and native materials, including locally sourced wood, to give its inhabitants a natural environment.

The Green Globe-certified resort introduced a group of Red Footed Tortoises to their new home. The tortoises will be looked after by the resort’s Grounds Team as part of the property’s environmental practices.

During the opening of the Turtle Sanctuary, a representative from the local Five Islands Primary School was invited to participate, after Galley Bay resort adopted the school and supports many of its initiatives.

Christine Young, the Environmental, Health and Safety Coordinator at Gallery Bay said;

" After a short ribbon cutting ceremony, 18 tortoises were released into their new home. Guests were able to interact with the tortoises one on one, have photo opportunities with them and obtain information from the Grounds Team on diet, maturity, size and ages,"

She went on to add:

At Galley Bay we strive to be tourism industry leaders and look forward to making this area not only a sanctuary for the tortoises but one that will attract other wildlife. This new initiative by our staff and management will also help us to achieve an even higher level of environmental awareness amongst our valued guests."

The Gallery Bay Resort & Spa was first certified by Green Globe in 2009, and over the years, it has introduced a wide range of green initiatives to preserve and protect the area. These include diminishing and recycling waste, improving energy efficiency, and training staff to deliver quality service.

The luxury resort has its own herb, fruit and vegetable garden with fresh produce that is used in the restaurants’ dishes.

The nation of Antigua and Barbuda lies between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and is famous for its wide selection of beautiful pristine white sand beaches.

Antigua is the largest of the twin-island nation and it is a hotspot for weddings, honeymoons and family holidays, thanks to its natural scenery which is typical of the Caribbean: white sand palm-fringed beaches, warm turquoise ocean waters, and verdant forests and landscapes.
