While Cambodia may be one of the world’s top holiday destinations thanks in large part to its rich culture and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Angkor Wat and the Preah Vihear Temple, cuisine is one area in which this South East Asian country lags behind regional peers like Thailand.

Foodies, Steven Halcrow and his fiancé Lina Goldberg are both working hard at dispelling the myth that Cambodian cuisine is nothing more than a series of fish curries. Goldberg a travel and food author along with Halcrow a chef have launched Siem Reap Food Tours, a unique take on the traditional Cambodia tours. Siem Reap Food Tours gives travellers the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of Cambodia’s food markets and local food outlets.

Siem Reap Food Tours operates intimate tours of Cambodia with groups no larger than four people and travellers can rest assured that the vendors and restaurants visited have been selected by Goldberg and Halcrow based on their own personal experience. Halcrow and Goldberg explained on their website:

“Siem Reap Food Tours takes the intimidation factor out of adventurous dining in Cambodia's cultural hub. We’ll act as your trusted guide, taking you to our favorite vendors and restaurants. We know the cuisine, we know the country, and from the safety of a friendly tuk tuk we’ll show you why we’ve fallen in love with Cambodia, its people, and its food.”

Holidaymakers travelling to Cambodia can book morning or evening tours, both of which are designed to give a true taste of Cambodian culture and cuisine including the much talked about Khmer delicacy prahok. As the tour is aimed at reflecting authentic Cambodian cuisine, Siem Reap Food Tours do not offer vegetarian tours but can accommodate those who wish to avoid red meat as well as those who are on a gluten free diet.

The tours begin at the Old market in downtown Siem Reap and then continues via tuk tuk. Each tour lasts between three and four hours and cost $65 per person, for an additional $10 hotel pick up and drop off service can be arranged.

Cambodia is one of South East Asia’s leading holiday destinations with billions of dollars in revenue generated from the tourism industry. Recent statistic show that in the first ten months of 2015, 3.6 million international travellers took holidays in Cambodia- a six per cent increase when compared to the same period in 2014.
