Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas to have artificial reef

The Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas will have an artificial reef built with 48 concrete reef balls and over 300 pieces of 55-pound ceramic antler-shaped artificial coral. The $3.5 billion five-star resort development is located in Nassau on New Providence Island and is scheduled to open in late spring 2015.

Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas to have artificial reef

The Baha Mar resort in the Bahamas will have its very own artificial reef when it opens to guests in 2015.

More than 300 pieces of 55-pound ceramic antler-shaped artificial coral and 48 concrete reef balls have been placed in the waters near the shoreline surrounding the upscale five-star resort development on New Providence Island in the Bahamas.

The reef balls will provide protective spaces for fish while encouraging coral growth and the pieces of antler-shaped artificial coral will create ecological conditions for coral settlement and growth.

The layout of the reef resembles a naturally occurring coral reef and will attract fish. The concrete balls and ceramic pieces will eventually be covered by a living reef and will attract many species of fish and marine creatures.

Work began on the reef in April with the help of volunteers who placed the pieces on the reef, and the environment team has already documented several marine species, such as sea urchins, sponges, coral and parrotfish, which now live in the reef. One the resort is open to guests, the reef will be accessible to snorkelers.

The luxury beachfront resort complex is set to be the largest single-phase resort in the Caribbean's history and it will feature a collection of luxury hotels including brands such as Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, Morgans Hotel Group, Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, and a world-class Casino Hotel that will offer 2,250 rooms.

The development will be home to a 50,000 square-foot retail village with boutique shops and local Bahamian arts and crafts, restaurants and entertainment venues; a 20-acre Eco Water Park with pool experience, and three luxury spas, including the largest spa in the Caribbean; an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Course; the largest convention centre in the Bahamas with 200,000 square-feet of space that will be used both for business and as an entertainment and sports arena; and a 100,000 square-foot casino which will be the largest gaming complex in the Caribbean.
