The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in the United States hosted an unusual concert last month. Almost 500 scuba diving and snorkelling music-lovers headed to the sanctuary for an underwater concert that was hosted by WWUS, a local radio station.

The 30th annual Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival took place at Looe Key Reef and underwater visitors listened to four hours of non-commercial music that was pumped out of a series of underwater speakers. Bill Becker, the event co-founder and coordinator, explained:

"We started this as an arts and cultural event 30 years ago (and) thought it would be a one-time thing. It's the only place we know of where music is put underwater for divers, snorkelers and the marine life."

During the unique event, the visitors listened to songs such as the Beatles' "Octopus's Garden" and the themes from well known Disney's "The Little Mermaid" and the TV series "Flipper."

According to the guests, the music was clear and underwater visibility was about 50 feet.

"I've seen colours from red to blue to white, and even the shades of the sun coming from the water line," commented Uli Clef, a snorkeler from Munich, Germany. "All these colourful fishes - that's perfect."

Some of the scuba diving concert attendees were dressed in costumes and pretended to play unusual metal instruments that had been created by local sculptor and artist August Powers.

Throughout the concert, the radio station broadcast diver awareness that promoted coral reef protection in one of the leading scuba diving destinations in the United States.

"We try to get divers to be aware of their impact on the coral reef so that they lessen that impact and this reef can be here for generations to come."

Added Becker.

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary covers an area of 2,900 square nautical miles and its turquoise waters are teeming with an array of spectacular marine creatures. While scuba diving in Florida, divers' can catch sighting of turtles, whales, dolphins, rays, eels, tropical fish, colourful corals and many more spectacular sights.
