The Caribbean island nation of St Kitts and Nevis is becoming a popular tourist destination and the country's tourism authorities have announced a new partnership with a U.S company that will help it become a green and sustainable destination.

St Kitts has formed a partnership with Destinations at Sustainable Travel International, a company that specialises in helping destinations develop and implement environmental protection solutions.

The Senior Director of Destinations at Sustainable Travel International, Kathleen Pessolano, spoke to tourism stakeholders last month during a tourism marketing meeting at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort about the island's future as an eco friendly destination. She explained:

"At the end of the day it's about balance. Nobody, especially the minister and ministry are trying to stifle growth...it's about growing in a way that balances the needs of industry and the needs of economic growth in the place, with the ends of the people, the community, the cultural heritage and the natural assets which are at the end of the day your strongest assets."

The Director said that there is an increasing demand for sustainable tourism and the Caribbean island was in a good position to attract eco-friendly travellers taking Caribbean holidays. Pessolano referred to the solar panel farm at the RLB International Airport as a great initiative to help St Kitts become a sustainable destination.

"The prime minister has said that a goal for St. Kitts and Nevis is to become a green economy and as the minister said it's an important first step," she added.

She went on to announce that St. Kitts has been selected as one of the destinations to participate in the global sustainable tourism council early adopter programme, the first destination in the Caribbean to pilot the new sets of criteria by the global sustainable tourism council.

St Kitts and Nevis is a twin-island nation located in the Caribbean and the two picturesque islands are separated by a two-mile channel. Both destinations are home to breathtaking natural landscapes and an abundance of exotic wildlife such as birds, turtles and tropical monkeys.
