Millennium and Copthorne Hotels to open Oman's first alcohol-free hotel

Millennium and Copthorne Hotels plc (MandC), Singapore's international hotel group, will be opening its second hotel in Oman after it signed an agreement with Shaza Muscat Company (SMC) to manage and operate the Muscat Grand Millennium Hotel.

The five-star property will open its doors to tourists visiting Oman in 2014 and it will be the country's first alcohol-free hotel. The hotel-group currently manages a hotel in Oman called Millennium Resort Mussanah which opened in February 2011.

"There is great potential in Oman. With increasing interest in the region, Muscat has seen strong growth in their tourism numbers. The Muscat Grand Millennium Hotel will cater to this growing industry and further strengthened MandC's foothold in the Middle East."

Commented Mr Kwek Leng Beng, the Chairman of Millennium and Copthorne Hotels plc.

The Sharia-compliant Muscat hotel will be connected to Muscat Grand Mall by a sky bridge and will have 324 guest rooms and suites and will cater for business guests and families taking holidays in Oman.

The Oman hotel's facilities will include a large ballroom with capacity for up to 1,000 people, a large pre-function room, VIP rooms, Majlis, eight board rooms and meeting rooms, and two full-sized swimming pools.

"Muscat continues to grow as an attractive tourist destination in the region, and the way forward is to cater to this burgeoning market by offering a full lifestyle and retail experience that meets not only regional, but also global expectations."

Explained the Chairman of Shaza Muscat Company, Khamis Mubarak Al Kiyumi.

Oman is a popular destination for tourists; in Muscat, its main city; holidaymakers can walk for miles along the city's sandy beaches and rugged coastline or explore the historic sites and attractions such as the Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani forts, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Alam Royal Palace, Qurum National Park and the Bait az-Zubair Museum.
