New independent Tourism Authority announced for Bermuda
The Caribbean island nation of Bermuda will have a new independent Tourism Authority after plans to scrap the government-run Department of Tourism were announced. The move is part of the Tourism Plan which was launched in 2012 in a bid to bring the island's tourism industry back to life and encourage more tourists to book and visit Bermuda.
Bermuda's Department of Tourism will be replaced by a new independent Tourism Authority by the end of March, 2014, according to tourism officials.
The government-run department is being abolished as part of the Tourism Plan which was launched in 2012 to revitalise the island's tourism sector in a bid to entice more travellers to take Bermuda holidays and boost hospitality investment.
Following his appointment in December, 2012, the Minister of Tourism Development and Transport, Shawn Crockwell, announced David Dodwell, owner of the Reefs Hotel and Club in Bermuda, as the chairman-designate of the new Tourism Authority.
The Tourism Authority legislation will be sent to Parliament when it resumes sessions in next week, and the passage of the Tourism Act is expected quickly.
"The government's election platform promised to remove the day-to-day running of tourism away from the political realm and to transition to an independent authority, a mammoth task that involves a multitude of issues. The transition will begin once the act is passed, and the transition is anticipated to be completed by the end of March 2014."
Shawn Crockwell explained. The tourism minister said that no staff will be dismissed and they will all have the opportunity to apply for positions within the new Tourism Authority.
"Should employees not be hired by the authority, employment opportunities will be made available within government ministries and departments."
He commented. Over recent months, the number of tourists who have taken holidays in Bermuda has fallen with a drop of 12 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year.
