Abu Dhabi's Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara awarded Green Globe Certification

The prestigious international Green Globe Certification has been awarded to the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara in Abu Dhabi.

The luxury hotel provides a unique escape for travellers visiting Abu Dhabi due to its location in the Liwa desert, one of the biggest deserts in the world. The hotel performed a comprehensive sustainability audit recently carried out by Farnek Consulting and scored high marks in all areas.

Initiatives and practices enforced by the hotel management and staff have enabled the property to become more environmentally friendly. There has been a 22 per cent reduction in electricity costs thanks to the improved room management system which controls the air conditioning and lighting and a waste segregation and recycling room has been launched.

The 206-room hotel now recycles 13 per cent of its rubbish, including plastic, glass, paper, cardboard and the restaurant's cooking oil.

An onsite sewerage treatment plant has been introduced which reduces water consumption by reusing grey water to irrigate the Abu Dhabi hotel's gardens and grounds.

Wael Soueid, the General Manager of the property believes that if the staff and management team are committed, any hotel can be sustainable. Mr Soueid explained:

"Sustainability is not a fad or a project it has to become integral to the operational procedure. We are a desert resort and whenever I look out of my hotel window, I am given a reminder of just how precious our water resources are. So naturally we are all acutely aware of our local environment and we have to accept responsibility for our own carbon footprint."

And he continued:

"Not only must we reduce our water and energy consumption, we plan and coordinate deliveries from our suppliers to minimise fuel pollution and we manage our own waste, without compromising on guest comfort, or service."

Green Globe is an internationally-recognised environmental certification which is awarded to businesses within the travel and tourism sector that operate green practices and are seen to be conserving energy, water and other resources.

In Abu Dhabi at the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, guests can relax in elegantly-decorated guest rooms, suites and villas. The accommodation boast spacious terraces and balconies where guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the vast desert and the villas boast private plunge pools and separate living and dining areas.

Holidaymakers can enjoy a variety of activities throughout in Abu Dhabi, from a dip in the hotel pool, pampering treatments at the spa, walks in the desert, or camel treks.
