Starwood's Westin brand to return to Singapore this November for first time in 10 years

The Westin brand will be returning to Singapore after a 10-year absence as owner Starwood Hotels and Resorts looks to double its presence in Asia within the next three to five years and the Westin Singapore is the first in this effort.

The Westin Singapore is situated in the new financial district in Marina Bay and will be opening its doors to guests in November, 2013. The new addition to Singapore hotels is just one of 160 new properties that Starwood has already built or has plans for in Asia.

The 305-room Singapore hotel will cater for both business and leisure travellers in the region and guests will have easy access to shops, restaurants, corporate offices, and the Marina Bay Sands Casino.

The hotel brand previously had two Westin hotels in Singapore, The Westin Stamford and The Westin Plaza, but the management contract lapsed in 2002. Starwood Hotels and Resorts has been searching for a suitable venue in the city in South East Asia since and they chose the property in Asia Square.

The worldwide hotel group has nine different brands and runs 1,146 hotels and resorts nearly 100 countries all over the world. Chuck Abbott, the Regional Vice President of Southeast Asia, at Starwood Hotels and Resorts explained:

"The demand is going to continue to grow. We have obviously China and India, being the two largest countries in the world, Indonesia being the fourth largest, all within five or six hours (away from) Singapore.

"Right now in Asia we have over 230 hotels, I think 160 in development. We expect in the next three to five years, we will probably double our footprint from where we are today."

The hotel will hold a two-day recruitment drive this week to fill up to 300 positions that vary from front office jobs and restaurant staff, to management associates. The majority of these positions are expected to be given to Singaporeans.

Singapore is known as the "Garden City" and it offers a wide variety of entertainment and attractions for holidaymakers, including museums, zoos, upscale shopping malls, gourmet restaurants, food markets, nightclubs and casinos.
