Etihad Airways and Kenya Airways sign strategic partnership
The largest Middle Eastern airline- Etihad Airways and Kenya Airways have entered into a codeshare agreement that will see Etihad gain a significant foothold in key Africa holiday destinations. In addition to the obvious benefits for each carrier, passengers will also benefit from greater choice when booking flights to Kenya and other destinations within each airline's network.
United Arab Emirates national carrier Etihad Airways has announced a strategic partnership with Kenya's own national carrier Kenya Airways. As part of the commercial agreement, Etihad will be able to place its EY code on Nairobi flights to 27 destinations across Africa. Similarly, Kenya Airways will place its KQ code on Etihad's daily flights from Nairobi to Abu Dhabi and 32 other destinations across Etihad's network.
Kenya Airways is now Etihad's 42nd codeshare partner, joining the company of airlines like Air France KLM and Air Seychelles. Thanks to these partnerships Etihad has amassed an impressive passenger network of 349 destinations.
Etihad CEO James Hogan stated the following of the Kenya Airways partnership; "The partnership agreement with Kenya Airways is in line with our strategy of forming alliances with airlines around the world to enhance our network and marketing reach. This agreement will also allow both airlines to benefit from cost savings achieved through synergies and economies of scale"
Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni echoed Mr Hogan's positive outlook and underscored the added value for consumers stating, "The new codeshare partnership with Etihad Airways is a significant strengthening of the global network of both airlines, which provides more choice to all our passengers. As part of the agreement, we are looking for greater collaboration and coordination on cargo operations, training and procurement opportunities that will make us more cost-efficient and customer-responsive"
It is no secret that Africa is key part of Etihad's international growth strategy. The Middle Eastern airline recently launched services to Triipoli, Nairobi and Lagos, "over the last five years we have more than doubled our services to Africa. During the same period we have flown nearly 3 million passengers between Africa and the UAE, and key destinations across our network" noted Mr. Hogan.
Etihad first began offering its customers direct flights to Kenya from Abu Dhabi in 2012, operating the route with a two-class A320 flight with a capacity for 120 economy and 16 business class passengers. This latest codeshare agreement will go a long way in enabling Etihad to benefit from the growing popularity of Africa holidays.
