The Tobago House of Assembly has recently reported on a successful marketing campaign aimed at increasing the number of UK travellers booking Tobago holidays. The "Got-to-Go Tobago" road shows launched in the UK on the 16th August 2012, visited cities like Manchester, London and Birmingham and allowed consumers and travel experts to sample some of the best aspects of Tobagonian culture including limbo, steel pan music, the local cuisine and even cocktail-making demonstrations.

Tobago House of Assembly's promotion of Tobago holidays at Road Show in the UK declared a success

During the build up to the celebration of Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th anniversary of independence, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) launched a unique international campaign to showcase all that Tobago holidays have to offer visitors from two of its key source markets - Europe and North America.

As part of the campaign, which kicked off on 16th August, the THA embarked on a string of “Got-to-Go Tobago” road shows aimed at both travel experts and consumers. The Got-to-Go Tobago Road Shows were hosted by a delegation of dedicated tourism officials and representatives of the various stakeholders for the island’s tourism sector including representatives from many luxury Tobago hotels and resorts.

Notably, this has been the first road show for the island since 2009, however, its importance was apparent In light of a significant decline in the number of travellers booking Tobago holidays from these key source markets in recent years. With the decrease owed to factors such as the global economic downturn and the ever-increasing Air Passenger Duty which have made flights to popular Caribbean destinations like Tobago increasingly expensive for travellers from the UK, the THA has recognised a need for more creative international marketing campaigns.

Communities in Crawley, Dorking, Manchester, London and Birmingham all had the opportunity to sample a taste of the Tobagonian culture with features including a food presentation by local chef Hasan DeFour, dance classes where attendees were treated to cocktail-making demonstrations hosted by expert and rum ambassador Ian Burrell, limbo demonstrations, musical performances incorporating the island’s national instrument- the steel pan, as well as an opportunity to meet with local sporting hero, former Manchester United Player and official tourism ambassador for Tobago Dwight Yorke.

As part of the effort to promote holidays in Tobago as the ultimate Caribbean getaway, the road shows also featured an expandable trailer referred to as the Tobagolator (Tobago Simulator) aimed at allowing participants to immerse themselves in the experience. The Tobagolator was undoubtedly the highlight of the campaign as the audience were said to be very receptive to the training sessions hosted in the trailer as well as the food samples and rum cocktails.
