Tourism officials in Bermuda recently announced a 12 per cent increase in the number of tourists taking Bermuda holidays in 2011 compared to 2010. The island welcomed 655 236 visitors to its shores in 2011, the second highest annual figure to date.

Bermuda’s Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert recently released the 2011 tourism figures and the island appears to have much to celebrate and look forward to in 2012 as all signs indicate a growth in the popularity of Bermuda holidays among worldwide travellers.

Bermuda, renowned for its unique pink sand beaches, pristine waters and subtropical climate, has a long standing reputation as a top holiday destination as reflected in the 1.22 per cent increase in the number of people arriving for their luxurious sun, sea and sand Bermuda holidays. However, despite attracting large numbers of leisure travellers, the British Overseas Territory is also a popular destination for businesspeople with a booming offshore finance sector.

The number of business arrivals to Bermuda increased by .34 per cent, while there was a 116 per cent growth in the number of visitors arriving for conventions. The overall growth in arrivals has been good news for Bermuda hotels with a three, nine and five per cent increase in hotel occupancy in the first, second and fourth quarters of 2011 respectively.

The statistics also showed that while there was a decline in the number of people from the UK and Canada booking holidays to Bermuda in 2011, the number of visitors from the U.S. and Europe was on the increase.

Mr Furbert stated that he was “excited and eager” for the future noting that Bermuda has enjoyed an “outstanding reputation” internationally as one of the best destinations for Caribbean holidays, walking away with a number of tourism awards over the course of 2011.

Most notably, Expedia Inc recently awarded Bermuda with its 2011 Top Destination of the Year Award. Expedia’s Market Manager, Trish Korzeniowski, commended the island’s tourism officials for their stellar work over the years.“Since we began to work with Bermuda in 2001 this destination has managed to have the motivation, commitment and partnership of those destinations ten times bigger. With coordinated seasonal offers, annual marketing presence in US, Canada and UK, a consistent branding look and feel, a try something new attitude and an amazingly focused team, Bermuda is the epitome of the Destination of the Year” stated Ms Korzeniowski.
