The 19th annual Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism conference (CMEx) will be held in Kingston, Jamaica. Bevan Springer, President of CMEx, hopes the meeting will help Jamaica holidays regain their appeal as safe and desirable destination.

Media Conference on Sustainable Tourism to be held in Jamaica

Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, will be the host of this year’s 19th annual Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism Conference (CMEx). The conference, scheduled to take place between 30th September to 4th October, will be held in one of the most prestigious Jamaica hotels in the region: the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. The Jamaica Tourist Board and the Ministry of Tourism will be the main sponsors of the event.

Other sponsors who support and look forward to the conference are the Anse Chastanet Resort, the Barbara Pyle Foundation, the Bay Gardens Resorts, the Caribbean Business Enterprise Trust, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, CaribWorldNews, among others.

Journalists from the Caribbean, North America and Europe, as well as development specialists and representatives from the hospitality sector, civil society and government sectors will be attending the event. The conference’s main goal is to build up a reassuring and appealing image around Jamaica holidays and discuss various issues including “the extent to which tourism stimulates other sectors of the economy.”

Any journalists or editors between the ages of 15 or 21, who are interested in participating, can apply for scholarships and fellowships. Scholarships cover the costs of air tickets, accommodations and registration; fellowships include accommodations and registration only.

John Lynch, Director of Tourism and Chairman of the Jamaica Tourist Board, acknowledges the positive impact the conference could have on the tourism sector for the country. “We recognise the value of strong media partnership in the marketing and promotion of a brand, and Jamaica, is once again honoured to welcome CMEx to our shores,” he said “We look forward to an engaging dialogue and to exploring ideas on the best way forward with our media and trade partners at home and across the region.”

This conference will be held in Jamaica for the fifth time, and, for the Jamaican tourism industry the timing is just right. The number of tourists taking holidays to Jamaica greatly decreased due to the unrest caused by the incursion in Tivoli Gardens earlier this year; now it is the CMEx’s intention to make travellers around the world feel safe again about booking holidays to the island.

Bevan Springer, President of CMEx, along with 60 other members will also attend the important meeting in Kingston. Springer explains how the Jamaican tourism industry is making huge efforts to re-brand its image, and states that the conference would be an excellent chance to gain traction. “I would say that this is a great opportunity. I think the CMEx is a great opportunity to show the world that all is well for leisure and tourism in Jamaica,” he says “It will send the message to the region and the rest of the world that Jamaica is doing business, and things are safe.”

Springer will also insist on the cultural values of Jamaica holidays in the conference, and the importance of tourism’s linkages to agriculture, music and other arts. “Jamaica’s tourism success has a lot to do with the fact that its music plays a significant role in marketing the country overseas. There are linkages in every area. We just need to do a better job in making sure that tourism benefits people.”

Jamaica offers a wide range of options for every holidaymaker, suitable accommodations for large families and tasteful rentals for those who prefer to travel alone. Private villas and cottages facing the Caribbean Sea, and sophisticated apartments located near different attractions are available all over the pretty Caribbean island.
