Keep the Oceans Clean Campaign Heads to Abu Dhabi During Volvo Ocean Race
Travellers taking Abu Dhabi holidays between 31st December, 2011 and 14th January, 2012 will be able to take part in activities as part of a new initiative that has been launched by the emirate and the Volvo Ocean Race to "Keep the Oceans Clean".
Abu Dhabi will be working with the Volvo Ocean Race in a new initiative, “Keep The Ocean Clean”, from 31st December, 2011 until 14th January, 2012.
The campaign has been launched to raise awareness about the importance of keeping the ocean free from rubbish and debris and will feature a series of free community arts projects that will take place in the city’s “Destination Village”.
Tourists taking Abu Dhabi holidays will be able to get involved with the campaign’s activities that will take place during the emirate’s fortnight-long hosting of the Volvo Ocean Race.
A “Keep the Oceans Clean” dome will be positioned at the Corniche in Abu Dhabi and will house a 5’5” sculpture - Skeleton Sea’s Albatross Exhibitionist - that has been created from rubbish collected from beaches, and a six-minute film that explains how thousands of albatross are killed every year because the birds mistake the rubbish for food.

The Skeleton Sea’s Albatross Exhibitionist was created by three “creative surfers” and artists, Xandi Kreuzeder from Germany, João Parrinha of Portugal, and Luis de Dios from Spain. The artists founded the initiative in 2005 in a bid to raise environmental awareness through “green art”.
The “Keep the Oceans Clean” dome will be following the Volvo Ocean Race along its 39,000 nautical mile adventures around the world.
During Abu Dhabi holidays, visitors can take part in the creation of a new unique sculpture for Abu Dhabi at the Destination Village, which will be made from beach rubbish and debris with the help of the artists, member of the public and children from local schools in the emirate.
Rubbish for the Abu Dhabi Skeleton Sea Sculpture will be collected during a series of beach clean-ups that will take place prior to the event and will involve engaging and educating children on environmental issues and responsible living. The activities are being developed by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.
German artist Xandi Kreuzeder hopes that the exhibition and the Volvo Ocean Race will inspire local residents, children and tourists taking holidays to Abu Dhabi to help keep the oceans clean.
“It’s more important than ever for people to do their bit to protect the environment, even if it means picking up bits of rubbish at their local beach,” he explained.
“If our message gets through to just a few people, then we believe it’s been worth all the effort.”

The Volvo Ocean Race will kick off on 29th October 2011 in Alicante, Spain and the route will follow Cape Town in South Africa, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Sanya in China, Auckland in New Zealand, Itajai in Brazil, Miami in the U.S, Lisbon in Portugal, Lorient in France, and Galway in Ireland.
During the two-week-long event, Abu Dhabi hotels are expected to see an influx of yachting enthusiasts taking holidays in Abu Dhabi to catch a glimpse of the beautiful vessels.
