Aswan to Host World Tourism Day 2011
The city of Aswan will welcome tourists taking Egypt holidays this month as it hosts the official 2011 World Tourism Day on 27th September. This year's WTD will highlight the importance of tourism through its theme - "Tourism - Linking Cultures".
Egypt will be celebrating World Tourism Day on 27th September, 2011 in the historic city of Aswan. This year's theme for the High-Level Think Tank will be "Tourism- Linking Cultures" and the event is expected to be attended by tourists taking Egypt holidays, local residents and tourism ministers and officials.
UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, said: "It is most fitting that Egypt, home to some of the world's most celebrated cultural heritage and a leading tourism destination, be the host country for the official celebrations of World Tourism Day 2011."
Every year, millions of international tourists take holidays to Egypt to discover the country's ancient sites, historic attractions and vibrant culture. This year's themed High-Level Think Tank will see public and private sector tourism stakeholders, academics and the media address the role of tourism in building understanding, respect, tolerance and forming relationships with foreign nations across the globe.
The Minister of Tourism of Egypt, Mounir Fakhri Abdel Nour, has invited tourism ministers and heads of tourism associations from countries across the world to participate in this important annual event.
Mounir Fakhri Abdel-Nour, said: "We are very honoured to be hosting the official celebrations of World Tourism Day 2011 in Egypt. Tourism is one of the most important sectors of our society, representing 12% of our GDP in 2010 and responsible for one in every seven jobs. World Tourism Day is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness around the world of this vital economic sector and its contribution to social, economic and environmental well-being worldwide and in Egypt in particular."
Activities that have been running all year in the run up to World Tourism Day include the annual WTD Photo Competition which offers a first prize of a round trip to Egypt. UNWTO has also launched its first World Tourism Day Twitter competition where people are asked to Tweet about how tourism links cultures. Winning entries will be published on the official programme which will be handed out during the WTD celebrations later this month.
As one of the leading tourists destinations for Egypt holidays, Aswan will offer visitors to World Tourism Day an array of impressive sights, attractions and luxury Egypt hotels.
Aswan boasts the Abu Simbel, the Aswan Dam, Lake Nasser and cruises along the River Nile. Later this year, the iconic Old Cataract Hotel on the banks of the Nile is scheduled to re-open to guests taking holidays in Egypt.
