Camaguey is looking to become a major holiday resort in Cuba

The central-eastern province of Camaguey in Cuba could soon receive a tourism makeover as plans are underway to build additional Cuba hotels in the area which will provide a further 21,500 rooms for travellers taking Cuba holidays by 2028.

An investment programme is being implemented into the region to boost the economy and attract more travellers to holidays in Cuba. Camaguey is home to more than 125km of beautiful beaches and the largest number of keys and islands in Cuba.

According to a report from Cuban Radio Rebelde, the Archipelago Savanna-Camaguey which is situated off the northern coast is home to an abundance of natural and historical sites and offers the perfect spot for tourism development.

"That region is a haven for migratory birds and the largest nesting site of pink flamingos. In Key Romano, the largest in Cuba, Ernest Hemingway found location for some of his books,” - the radio report said.

The investment programme will see the development of 25 new Cuba hotels in the northern keys of the province, which is part of the Savanna-Camagüey Archipelago. This group of islands is shared by the provinces of Villa Clara and Ciego de Avila which are regarded as up and coming tourist resorts.

The national project plans to build a further 40,000 hotel rooms in the region, which stretches from Villa Clara to Camaguey, with more than half of these rooms expected to be built in the four keys situated off the northern coast of the Camaguey province.

At present, Camaguey offers 1,500 hotel rooms for tourists taking holidays to Cuba with the majority of accommodation situated at the Santa Lucia Beach Resort, and in the cities of Camaguey and Florida.

Plans for additional hotels across the island are underway, following President Obama’s announcement earlier this year where he stated that Cuba travel restrictions have been relaxed for American travellers who are visiting Cuba for cultural, educational, academic or religious purposes.
