Stage One of Bahamas Airport Completed as New US Departure Terminal is Unveiled

Travellers from the United States taking Bahamas holidays will now be able to use the newly built U.S Departure Terminal at the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) in Nassau, after it was unveiled last week.

The opening of the new terminal marked the completion of the first of three stages of a $409.5 million airport redevelopment project. The terminal was completed on time; 20 months after construction began in July, 2009 and came under budget at £198.1 million.

The development of the airport has been described as "the crown jewel and the most astonishing improvement program in our history" by the Minister of Tourism and Aviation for the Bahamas, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, and is expected to enhance the holiday experience for both tourists taking holidays in The Bahamas and business travellers.

Prime Minister of the Bahamas, Hubert Ingraham, commented: "For far too long we ranked among the least efficient and least customer-friendly airports in our region. Today's commissioning signals a definite change and a new direction."

Tourism in the Bahamas generates 75 per cent of the gross domestic product and the newly-refurbished airport is expected to serve more than five million passengers each year who will be visiting local attractions and boosting occupancy levels of Bahamas hotels and resorts, as well as the island’s economy.

Prime Minister Ingraham added that the aim of the airport is to "enhance the quality of life for Bahamians and residents and the visitor experience of guests to our country."

The airport will comprise 585,000 square-feet of terminal space once all three stages of the project are completed, a 21 per cent increase on the previous space, and the capacity for up to 50 per cent more travellers arriving and departing to and from their Bahamas holidays.

The new terminals will also have 34 gates including one gate which will be able to handle an A380 aircraft. The second stage of the redevelopment is the U.S/ International Arrivals Terminal which is scheduled for completion in autumn 2012. The third and final stage will be the International Departures Terminal and the 112,000-square-foot domestic arrivals and departure terminals which are expected to be completed by autumn 2013, just in time for the influx of visitors predicted to arrive on the island for the opening of the 1,000-acre Baha Mar resort and convention complex in 2014.
