Daily Mail recommends Caribbean holidays in Grenada

The Daily Mail website recommends Grenada holidays for travellers looking for unspoiled scenery, friendly and hospitable local residents and a warm tropical climate.

The charming island is a country located in the south-eastern Caribbean Sea northwest of Tobago and Trinidad and is famously known as the Island of Spice because of it large quantities of nutmeg and mace crops, and cinnamon, cloves and ginger spices.

The idyllic island is just 136 square miles in size and home to 110,000 local residents who are full of character and charm and are known for going out of their way to be friendly and helpful towards visitors enjoying Grenada holidays.

In 1974, Grenada finally gained independence after a troubled history dating back centuries and the island is now a Commonwealth Realm.

The island was badly damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 as raging 160 mph winds destroyed the buildings, houses, and nutmeg orchards which had been operating for decades and become the island’s main income.

Nutmeg orchards take up to ten years to mature and the island soon realised that as time was not on their side, the only way it could recover was to reinvent itself as tourist destination and welcome tourists on Caribbean holidays.

New Grenada hotels have since been rebuilt and thanks to the positive attitude of hospitable islanders, the beautiful country is gaining recognition for its breathtaking scenery and charming lifestyle, despite being located close to St. Lucia and Barbados.

Travellers enjoying holidays in Grenada will find plenty of activities during their breaks including snorkelling in warm tropical waters, swimming in cascading waterfalls to exploring historical monuments and sites in the capital city of St. George’s in the south west of the island.

The famous Grand Anse Beach is just ten minutes from St. George’s attracts tourists with its two mile stretch of white sand and excellent conditions for body-boarding and surfing activities.
