Starwood eyeing kenya hotels market
Owners of the Sheraton global hotel brand, Starwood, are considering entering into the operation of Kenya hotels, East Africa's largest economy, as it looks to follow in the footsteps of competing global brands including Intercontinental and Hilton.
The global hotel group Starwood is eyeing the Kenya hotel market and an entry into the East Africa hotels industry after the recent announcement that the Southern Sun Hotel Group has taken over the Holiday Inn Nairobi.
Starwood, the owners of the global Sheraton brand, has had previous experience in the Kenya hotels market when it briefly managed a beach property in Mombasa in the 1980's but withdrew from the contract after failing to understand the market.
Competing global brands including Hilton and Intercontinental have operated Kenya hotels for decades. Hilton has been operating the Nairobi Hilton Hotel for a number of years and Intercontinental has owned and operated its flagship Nairobi property since the 1970's and the hotel group has also recently opened a Crowne Plaza hotel in the upper hill district of the capital city.
The recent growth in the meetings and conferencing market has attracted large hotel companies to start investing in Kenya hotels, whether it is through ownership or management on a long term basis.
The Sheraton brand manages two hotels in Kampala and Addis Ababa and as competing brands are entering the Kenya hotels market, including the opening of a Rezidor brand Radisson Hotel in 2012, the Starwood brand may soon decide to join them.
