Sandals takeover puts Emerald Bay Resort back on the Caribbean holidays map

The Emerald Bay Resort in Exuma is thriving since being taken over by the Sandals brand earlier this year and is playing a vital role in enticing more travellers to take Bahamas holidays and boosting the island's economy.

Sandals takeover puts Emerald Bay Resort back on the Caribbean holidays map

Chief Executive Officer, Adam Stuart, and General Manager of the resort, John Keating recently said that it was important to take over the hotel and resort, which was formerly run by Four Seasons, in order to keep the island's tourism economy thriving.

Mr Stuart said:

"The Four Seasons is an excellent company worldwide and it built a beautiful hotel within the Emerald Bay Development Company. We were down here about six years ago when it opened and we wanted to cash in to ensure that the island kept going. We think the people on this island are fantastic and there are wonderful activities to do. The island is clean so it has the bones for success."

The CEO of Sandals Hotels and Resorts said that it was important for the hotel to help put Exuma back on the Caribbean holidays map and showcase the island in a way that the Four Seasons could perhaps not do by themselves.

"It comes with promoting the island's natural beauty and having airlift, so we are glad that Air Canada is here and American Airlines is going to do the same thing as well by having three daily flights from the United States into George Town."

A recent partnership between Air Canada, the resort, and the Ministry of Tourism saw the introductory flight to George Town, Exuma last Sunday with the arrivals of travellers on Bahamas holidays. The latest of the Caribbean's Sandals hotels and resorts initially opened on 22 January this year but opened its doors to the first paying guests on their Bahamas holidays on 4 February.

Mr Keating said:

"It has been going very well and we tried through Unique Vacations, our travel agents, not to fill the resort to capacity all the time, but the demand is still very, very high. Bookings are very strong as well. Since we have taken over, we built quite a few [sections] to the hotel.

"We built Barefoot Restaurant, which is a signature of Sandals, which is a restaurant by the sea and we also built a pub, which is another signature of Sandals and we have the largest swimming pool in the Caribbean, which is an acre in size. The guests are happy about those things."

The success so far of the luxury resort has initiated plans to build additional Sandals resorts in the region which will also offer all inclusive holidays in the Bahamas.
