Cayman Islands market share remains stable
As effects of the global recession remain evident for many Caribbean holiday destinations, Cayman Islands officials are optimistic towards its position as a popular holiday destination, even though arrivals to the islands have decreased.
During a presentation to the Cayman Islands Tourism Association at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, President Stephen Broadbelt announced that the Cayman Islands were ahead of many other Caribbean destinations, with a regular flow of visitors despite a 13.4 per cent decline in air arrivals compared to this time last year.
The Caribbean destination is currently in 17th place, the same position as 2008, in the region for travellers taking Grand Cayman holidays by air.
Stephen Broadbelt said:
"So we're not losing any market share, we're staying right around the same position as we were last year. We're not losing customers to other destinations at this point in time but it's something that we need to keep an eye on now more than ever in the past."
Travellers taking Cuba holidays and Jamaica holidays by air have increased by over three per cent and the top six Caribbean destinations determined by air arrivals are the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas, Cuba, Cancun, and Puerto Rico.
Stephen Broadbelt added:
"The Dominican Republic gets more air arrivals in a month that we do in a whole year."
Despite being two of the top six destinations for travellers taking Caribbean holidays, air arrivals are down for both Cancun and Bahamas. Regional cruise numbers however have increased with more travellers taking Grand Cayman holidays this way, resulting in the destination moving up a spot to third place.
There are also concerns over the spending habits of travellers on their Grand Cayman holidays once they have arrived in the region.
Stephen Broadbelt said:
"We have to look at what they spend when they get here, especially with hotels giving nights away at extremely low rates just to get the traffic through here,".
