In the blink of an eye the image disappears and you are transported back to the reality of standing on ground trodden on by kings for this is Ritigala. The mountain is steeped in myth and mystery and is the site of centuries old ruins, a veritable stone monastery that lies in Ritigala’s dense jungle.

The climb up Ritigala is unique for the ancient stone stairway masks the steepness of the ascent; the steps, made of granite stone fitted flawlessly together, gracefully curve and twist their way up the mountain. The stone circles at intervals on the path are thought to perhaps represent the cycle of life.

Kitulgala - A pleasant town whose name is derived from the kitul tree, vast numbers of which grow in the area. The town is situated on a particularly delightful stretch of the Kelani River that incorporates 2 and 3 and there are seven rapids to tackle, each with their own unique names. On a run down the river you run into the likes of Virgin's Breast, Butter Crunch, Killer Fall and the Rib Cage. As the names suggest, they each have their own distinct character. Next you will proceed to Nuwara Eliya and visit a tea plantation and tea factory.

Nuwara Eliya – Sri Lanka's premier hill resort with a fine bracing mountain climate, Nuwara Eliya is also the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, producing some of the world’s best tea. The mountain slopes and valleys are a carpet of velvety green tea plantations, interspersed with gushing streams and tumbling waterfalls. Red or green roofed plantation bungalows, English country style homes and hotels with lovely flower gardens, a fine 18 hole golf course and a racecourse gives Nuwara Eliya a decidedly British character.
