Overview

This tour takes you through the best and most striking of Nicaragua’s colonial gems, starting at the capital city of Managua and including the beautiful Granada and charming Leon, both legendary for their colonial riches. On this tour you’ll also be learning about local culture, visiting museums, admiring impressive natural sights and mingling with the locals.

Day 1 - Managua

After being greeting by our local representatives at the airport you will be escorted and transferred to your hotel, the Seminole Plaza.

The tour starts on the same day, with a panoramic sightseeing walk around Managua, where you will be stopping off at its historical centre, admiring its colonial remnants after it was once destroyed by an earthquake in 1972. You’ll be taking in sights like the Old Cathedral, the National Theatre, the Presidential Palace, the Metropolitan Palace of Culture, the Malecon, John Paul II’s Plaza, the Memorial Park Sandino in Tiscapa’s Hill and the Archaeological Museum of Acahualinca.

The overnight stay will be at your hotel in Managua.

Day 2 – Granada and Islets of Nicaragua Lake

After breakfast at your hotel you will be departing Managua with an onward transfer to the colonial city of Granada. Once there you will join a city tour where you will be taken around the historical centre of Granada on a typical horse drawn carriage. In the afternoon, right after lunch, you will be heading to Nicaragua’s Lake for a sailing journey aboard a small boat taking you along several of the lake’s 365 islets of volcanic origin. After all this excitement you will return to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 3 – Granada – Mombacho’s Volcano – Masaya – Caterina

In the morning, right after breakfast, you will be taken to visit the spectacular Mombacho Volcano’s Natural Reserve, where you will find a wealth of wildlife in the form of numerous plant and animal species and where the area’s fertile soil is also used for coffee production. After making the journey to the top of the reserve you will get to enjoy amazing views over Nicaragua’s Lake, its islets, the Masaya Volcano and the surrounding greenery – a truly spectacular sight. The tour continues with a visit to the Masaya Volcano National Park, where you will also be visiting its museum and learn about the many traditions of Nicaragua’s native tribes and communities. You will have time to appreciate the area’s unique geological formation with its striking fauna and flora. Later on, you’ll be making your way up to the crater to observe the amazing natural adaptation of parrots to survive in the sulphurous atmosphere of this active volcano. After lunch the journey continues towards Masaya’s Crafts Market, where you will be able to browse through all kinds of ceramic crafts and objects typical of the region. The last activity of the day will be a visit to the municipality of Catarina, which is home to the country’s largest lagoon. The region is also home to one of the country’s most beautiful sites, such as the town of San Juan de Oriente, also known as “the town of craftsmen”.

Day 4 – Leon

After enjoying a revitalising breakfast in your hotel you will start the journey towards the colonial city of Leon. Once there you will visit Old Leon, where you will find the ruins of the original city, founded by the Spanish conquistadors in 1524, and abandoned for unknown reasons. You will be able to admire the Swarms of San Jacinto, a geothermal place right at the base of the Santa Clara volcano and a rare natural phenomenon. Next you’ll be moving on to the modern city of Leon, where right ffter lunch in El Sesteo restaurant, you will be enjoying a panoramic city tour stopping at The Real Basilica del Asuncion, visiting Ruben Dario’s grave (Nicaragua’s most famous poet and one of the most celebrated in the Americas too) and admiring several beautiful churches such as La Recollecion, La Merced, El Calvario and the Church of Subtiaba. At the end you will also have time to explore the Art Museum of Ortiz-Guardian and the Museum of Legends and Traditions.

Day 5 - Leon

After breakfast in the morning you will have free time to enjoy the city at your own pace. In the afternoon you will be heading back to Managua for a short visit. The overnight stay will be at your hotel in Leon.

Day 6 - Managua

Soon after enjoying breakfast at your hotel you’ll be escorted back to the airport for your return flight back home.
