La Tortuga

5 stars

This large 110-feet double decker floating hotel provides superb floating accommodation with 7 en-suite guest cabins - 6 twin/triple cabins and one double - that perfectly accommodate two or three divers each. This massive ship is permanently secured in a protected channel so that it never moves, even when tropical storms lash against it or windy days create waves. Because of the boat being extremely sturdy and level, there is never any seasickness to experience, and a stay aboard La Tortuga is always guaranteed to be a pleasant one.

  • Unique villa complex in Varadero Set in lush gardens just 50 metres from Vardero's stunning beach, La Tortuga comprises 13 separate villas, offering 44 rooms and a separate hotel area with 144 rooms. La Tortuga is close to the nightlife and bars of Varadero.
  • Great facilities for all ages La Tortuga offers leisure facilities to suit everyone, from a kids' club for 4-12 year olds, to water sports, a games room, tennis and a fitness centre for the active. There are also daily activities and evening entertainment.
  • All rooms have panoramic views of the gulf stream Guests can enjoy the great views from their rooms, which are equipped with all modern conveniences. All are air conditioned, with satellite TV, in-room safe, balcony or terrace, private facilities with bath or shower and a telephone.

The fore deck is passengers' favourite hang-out place to enjoy tasty snacks like hot fresh pizza and your favourite beverage served to you as you return from your last dive of the day and before dinner. This is also a great spot to kick back, and relax, enjoy that perfect mojito, or smoke a great Cuban cigar while swapping tales of the day’s diving. Aboard La Tortuga passengers can enjoy various guided marine tours, day and night scuba diving, and even shopping at their very own shop selling souvenirs and limited dive spares, all at very reasonable prices. With a number of skiffs moored alongside La Tortuga, diving could not be any more civilised. Step into the skiffs, and within minutes you will be over the dive sites. The journey time obviously varies, but so do the dive sites – there are over 100 of them!

Daily Routine and Itinerary Information

  • Departures are on Saturdays and trips last for 6 nights
  • Transfers to and from Havana are included (guests must be in Havana on the previous Friday evening)
  • The journey includes 3 dives per day (more optional dives and night dives available subject to tides - payable locally)

Jardines de la Reina is one of the very best dive destination in the world for diving with sharks. Over 7 species are seen on a weekly basis, including grey reef sharks, lemon sharks, nurse sharks and silk sharks. Great Hammerheads are often seen in the blue, and whale sharks frequent Jardines de la Reina from late October to early December. Goliath grouper are common sightings, weighing in at 400 lbs! Tarpon, bonefish, and a plethora of marine life inhabit the highly protected and pristine reefs in this stunning marine reserve. And dont forget Nino and Franco, two of the resident saltwater crocodiles. Franco rests on the mooring lines of La Tortuga at night, and at 4 metres in length, happily poses for photographs. Nino is the bay - only 3.5 metres, and you can get up close and personal with him in the mangroves - snorkelling with him is an option for the more adventurous!

Our Recommendations - Take in Havana for a 3 nights, transfer to Jucaro to take the boat to La Tortuga, and then take in Cayo Largo, Varadero or Cayo Levisa for 4 nights before returning back to the UK from Havana on the second Tuesday.
