The British colonisation of India left behind many great things that contributed immensely to bringing India to where it stands globally in today's world. If there is one contribution that stands out and is still maintained and cherished as it was, to this very day, it would have to be a sprawling railway system that stands the test of time as an outstanding feat of engineering.
Though tracks span the length and breadth of the subcontinent, no part of the system is more impressive than the three mountain railways grouped as a single World Heritage site: the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and the Kalka Shimla Railway. These lines offer riders not only breath-taking views of the mountains but also an unmatched travel adventure in rugged mountainous terrain.
