A fascinating journey into South Africa's most captivating wonders, this self drive adventure will take travellers to see the country's highlights without forgetting the African "Big Five" as the tour also includes a safari experience at the end.
Embark on the expedition of a lifetime as you are taken to the legendary Winelands for some spectacular whale-watching or are driven through the mesmerising Garden Route to admire the awe-inspiring views of the dramatic mountainous landscapes as it winds down to one of South Africa's most exclusive private game reserves - where you'll also be staying for two action-packed days. The tour ends with a visit to one of the world's great natural wonders in Oudtshoorn - the Cango Caves, before being driven to the old historic town of Stellenbosch, where you will be sampling wines of merit and strolling through colonial Cape Dutch buildings.
The tour comprises 12 nights and 13 days of adventure and includes car hire for some self-driven excursions during your leisure time.
Day 1 Arrival to Cape Town
After your arrival into Cape Town International Airport, you will be greeted by a Thompsons Africa representative and transferred to your hotel where you will spend the rest of the day at your own leisure. During the first 3 days of this tour you will be making discoveries at your pace, with plenty of free time available for independent sightseeing and strolling around Cape Town on your own.
Suggestions: During your time at leisure make the most of your visit and explore Cape Town, also known as the “Mother City”. Take in the glorious vies of the famous V&A Waterfront, where you can enjoy the buzz of the working harbour, world class restaurants, shopping and so much more. There are various day tours available in Cape Town and we suggest spending one of your free 3 days by going on the full day Cape Peninsula Tour, where you will be driven along the Atlantic seaboard via Hout Bay, to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and its scenic viewing point. You will then stop at Boulders Beach to see the African penguins, and then travel through the naval port of Simon’s Town. Simon’s Town is situated on False Bay and is rich in history, character and atmosphere.
Day 4 - Cape Town to Hermanus
After breakfast you can go to collect your car at the Avis Cape town Downtown deport, you can begin your self drive tour travelling to the seaside village of Hermanus via the Hottentot Holland Mountain range. After check in to your selected hotel in the afternoon you will be exploring the quaint town of Hermus and the surrounding area at your own pace.
Hermanus has become known as the heart of the Cape Whale Coast, attracting nature lovers from all over the world, with numerous vantage points for viewing the southern right whales during their annual migration season (July – November). Hermanus is famous for its long stretches of beach, mild climate, rich floral kingdom and friendly environment.
Day 5 - Hermanus to Knysna
Guests are based in the main lodge on arrival depending upon the time game drive takes place in the afternoon. There will be two game drives each day on days 8 and 9 and a morning game drive on day 10.
Day 10 - Kariega Game Reserve to Oudtshoorn
After breakfast you will be heading along ‘Route 62’, one of the most beautiful travel routes in South Africa, as well as the one of the least known and least travelled ones. You will travel through the little towns of Calitzdorp, Bazrrydale, a Port Wine producing area, via Montaqu, Robertson before reaching the historic town of Stellenbosch.
Day 13 - Stellenbosch / Depart Cape Town
Stellenbosch is the second oldest town in South Africa. This historic town features many Cape Dutch building and also has one of the oldest and largest universities in South Africa.
Sample wines of merit produced in this area at several world renowned wine farms. Stroll through the streets of Stellenbosch town, browsing the many interesting curio shops.
This afternoon return Cape Town International Airport and return your hired vehicle prior to boarding your onward flight home.
