Holidays in Hanoi
Vietnam’s historic capital, Hanoi, is a thriving, bustling and ever-changing city - rich in the complex heritage of its colonial past but firmly rooted in the modernity of the 21st century. Immersed in layers of history reflecting the country’s Chinese and French occupations and turbulent recent past, the city today also offers up a burgeoning art scene, wonderful restaurants and modern luxuries.
As one of the most rapidly developing places in Southeast Asia, this is a city positively thronging with activity, ideas and optimism – serving up a captivating combination of old and new, where east and west combine.
Many visitors pay homage at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum – a quiet, respectful place of contemplation, and the final resting place of one of Vietnam’s most famous and iconic leaders. If you’re hungry for more information, the Ho Chi Minh Museum offers modern, imaginative exhibitions based on his life and his country’s struggles, while Ho Chi Minh's Vestige preserves his home and several possessions as a kind of shrine and memorial.
Vietnam’s turbulent history of conflict is well documented at Hanoi’s Army Museum and Air Force Museum, with plenty of aircraft and other military items to see. The National Museum of Vietnamese History and the Museum of the Vietnamese Revolution add further layers to the compelling national story, revealing multiple layers and perspectives. You can also visit several famous wartime sites, such as Hoa Lo Prison – better known as the Hanoi Hilton.
Hanoi is home to several temples – places of worship, learning and contemplation - which are very popular with tourists, providing interesting architecture and displays in attractive surroundings. Ngoc Son Temple and the Temple of Literature are two of the most popular.
Despite the city’s frantic development, it also retains plenty of beautiful green spaces. Don’t miss the locals’ favourite, Hoan Kiem Lake, for peaceful contemplation and tai chi, or the lively Lenin Statue & Park. After all that history and culture you’ll have worked up an appetite, and Hanoi is a wonderful place to sample some amazing foods and local flavours.
