Family holidays in Indonesia

Indonesia for families

Family holidays to Indonesia offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you all to share. Your children can return home with stories of encounters with dragons, meetings with great apes, journeys to steaming volcanoes and hidden jungle temples overrun with curious monkeys - experiences that the whole family will treasure forever.

Indonesia also benefits from blissful tropical weather and stunning clean beaches with well-established resorts on the most famous island of Bali that are perfect for a sun-drenched family holiday by the sea. The Balinese's legendary friendliness adds to the appeal of the island, as your children will be treated with the utmost kindness and care.

Family activities

Beyond bucket-and-spade days on Bali's postcard-perfect beaches, there is a dizzying array of things to see and do for families visiting Indonesia. Snorkelling is a real must, as it introduces you to the glorious marine world that rims much of the islands. Older children and parents may also want to try scuba diving, to get an even closer look at the creatures that live beneath the waves. There are several dive centres across the islands that offer try dives, as well as full courses, so you can experience something truly different as a family.

There's plenty of excitement to be had on land too. Hikes and elephant rides are a fantastic way to get up close to Indonesia's tropical landscape and spot wildlife such as monkeys. In Bali, Ubud's Monkey Forest is ideal for a family excursion. Its ancient Hindu temple sits in the centre of a rainforest reserve that's overrun with curious grey macaques. In the south, Uluwatu is similarly enthralling and has the added draw of hosting a traditional fire dance at sunset. The family will be transfixed by this Hindu tale played out with ornate costumes, chanting and fire in a small amphitheatre on the clifftop. Taking an elephant trek through the forest is also highly recommended.

Visiting Java's awesome man-made marvels is also an experience that will capture the whole family's imagination. Adults will enjoy the rich history and magic of the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, while kids can channel their inner adventurers, clambering around the ancient monuments and inside the mysterious temples, with volcanoes clearly visible on the horizon.

Family-friendly resorts

Bali is among the best places for a family holiday in Indonesia as it has a wide range of child-friendly accommodation and excellent tourist facilities making travelling with youngsters more manageable. Kuta is the most developed resort on the island, with some excellent beachfront family hotels such as the Hard Rock Hotel Bali, which features water slides, rock climbing, cooking, dancing and arts and crafts to keep children amused at all times. For a less full-on option, try the peaceful Bali Garden Beach Resort with a kids' pool by the beach and family rooms large enough for six. Kuta also boasts child-friendly eateries, the Waterbom water park and a range of watersports from the white sandy beach.

For a more low-key place to stay, Sanur has a quiet promenade that runs the length of its golden sands and is backed by unimposing international hotels. The gentle clear waters, protected by an outer reef, are calm enough for children to paddle and swim safely. The Griya Santrain Resort is a very popular family option in the area, while the luxurious Bali Hyatt Hotel features interconnecting rooms and a kids club.

The upmarket resort of Seminyak, rising beside a wide and beautiful sandy beach, is another great spot for families, though its hotels tend to be on the high-end, more expensive side. There is a bevy of restaurants and boutique shops here, as well as a clutch of superb family hotels. W Retreat and Spa Bali has large villas and interesting daily kids activities, with a swimming pool right beside the beach.
