Where to go in Ecuador

Ecuador is a country bursting with diversity, from its landscape to its architecture and even its people. Whether you are after culture, adventure or a relaxing break away, this small but beautiful nation can offer you it all. The incredible, contrasting scenery creates the perfect environment for outstanding biodiversity, meaning you can get up close and personal to some of nature's most fascinating creatures and plants.

Whether you come alone, bring a friend or partner, or choose to bring the whole family, this small but exciting nation is brimming with things to do and see, ensuring you have the holiday of a lifetime.

Each year, Ecuador brings more than a million visitors to its shores and a large number of these come to see the incredible Galapagos Islands.

Serving as the inspiration for Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, the islands are around 1,000 km from the mainland but are well worth the journey. As soon as you land on the Galapagos Islands you will wowed by their beauty and wildlife. You can see creatures here that are found nowhere else in the world, and plenty of others that you will rarely get chance to have such a close encounter with.

From giant tortoises to marine iguanas and sea lions, there is a variety of wildlife that call the volcanic environment of the Galapagos Islands home, making it the perfect hub for nature enthusiasts.

On the mainland itself, there is plenty to discover. Ecuador is largely divided into three main regions, each benefitting from its own unique personality and equally as fascinating as the others.

Sierra is situated in the middle of the country and is largely dominated by the Andes, giving it a daunting landscape. With more than 30 volcanoes and several small groups of hills, it is the agricultural hub of Ecuador.

From rural farming villages to haciendas and the country's capital and oldest city Quito, the sierra is a beautiful area to explore further.

The Oriente is to the east of the sierra and it is here that there is a small but magnificent portion of the Amazon Rainforest. This offers a unique opportunity to explore wildlife as you truly enter their world. In an environment of canopy towers and wild, lush jungle, you can get close to monkeys, sloths, toucans and a diverse collection of birds and plant life.

A more coastal region is found to the west of the sierra, with nearly 1,000 km of ocean between the mainland and the famed Galapagos Islands. In this area, there are many farms, with bananas, sugar, coffee, rice and cacao crops being grown in this region. Of course, there are also plenty of stunning beaches to explore.

Wherever you choose to stay in Ecuador, you will be impressed by its contrasting landscape, beautiful wildlife, and its history-rich culture.
