A fisherman’s town on Oman’s eastern coast, Sur has been well known in the past for being Oman’s main centre of trade with East-Afria as well as for its Dhow buildings. While Dhows are still being built in Sur, nowadays this has become a quiet town where travellers can wander around its authentic souks filled with Middle-Eastern ware. The whole town has that distinctive Arabic feel with locals wearing dish-dash or abayas and many nearby Arabian historic sites to visit such as the forts, the marine museum and of course the dhows. Or for a lazy day during your Oman holidays a stroll along the panoramic quay may suffice.
A great starting point for exploring Oman, Sur has great beaches and several points of interests to see and many things to do such as turtle watching within an hour drive at Ras Al Hadd or The Wahiba Sands from which Oman’s beautiful desert can be seen and which can also be reached within an hour drive. One of Oman’s most famous cities for building wooden ships, its historical location gives Sur a hand to monitor the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.
