Sohar was once the ancient capital of Oman and nowadays still stands as one of the most developed cities in the Sultanate of Oman outside its current capital of Muscat. Having had a rich sailing history as a traditional fishing town, many believe this coastal town to have been the birthplace of the legendary Sindbad the Sailor. Nowadays however, this city is more recently known as Oman's industrial hub due to the massive developments in the Sohar Industrial Port.
Visitors will be attracted to Sohar’s very large and functional souk or street market full of tailors, fruit sellers and fishermen as well as to its imposing four-storey fortress which stands apart with its six towers overlooking the bay. The town is also close to ancient copper mines and the tallest mountain in Oman at Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain). For more historic sightseeing during your Oman holiday here, Sohar is also fairly close to the fort-towns of Ibri, Nakhl, Rustaq and Nizwa.
