Green Turtles

Duration: Half Day

green turtles

This memorable tour will take you along Oman’s beautiful coastline, visiting sleepy fishing villages and white sandy beaches on the way. The highlight of the trip is enjoying the spectacular sight of hundreds of giant turtles nesting on the local shores.

Your tour will start in the fishing village of Quriyat, located on the Arabian Gulf’s coastline. Stroll around the beautiful harbour, which is surprisingly modern, although the dhows (traditional Arabian wooden vessels) are a reminder of ancient times when the town was a major trading point.

From Quriyat we proceed to the Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular natural limestone crater that was created many years ago by a collapsing mountain. The large hole is filled with blue-green sea water and many of the locals swim here. It is also a popular tourist spot.

We then drive to Finns beach, a beautiful white sandy beach also known as White Beach. Stop for a photo and enjoy a relaxing swim in the clear turquoise waters before we drive onwards to Wadi Tiwi, one of the most beautiful wadis (oasis) in Oman. Walk through lush date palms and along the bottom of the steep gorge, where you can take a welcoming dip in the natural pool. Most wadis are dry throughout the year until the monsoon rains come, but Tiwi Wadi has water flowing all year round. Here we will stop briefly to enjoy a picnic lunch and the tranquillity of this stunning oasis, a stark contrast to the surrounding mountains and dry, barren landscape.

You will also get the chance to visit the mysterious ruins of Bibi Miriam’s Tomb in the nearby village of Qalhat. This local noblewoman’s tomb is one Oman’s oldest sites. Formerly a beautiful mosque, it is the only standing structure in Qalhat after this once prosperous port town was destroyed in the 16th century by the Portuguese.

Finally, we drive onwards to the traditional fishing village of Sur. Here you can stroll around the harbour and see the fishermen in action before visiting the Dhow building yard, which Sur is renowned for. These traditional Arabian wooden fishing boats are still built by hand today.

After checking into the Ras Al Had Hotel, where you can freshen up and have dinner, you will be picked up at around 21:00 to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights − giant green turtles nesting on the local beaches of Ras Al Had. This is one of the most amazing and memorable experiences you will ever have. When the baby turtles hatch, they have to race towards the open sea to escape their predators, but many don’t make this long journey. Humans have to be very careful around these beautiful protected marine creatures, but if you don’t mind waking up early, you can help collect the babies in a basket before dawn and transfer them to the nearby turtle reserve. This spectacular natural phenomenon will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of your holiday in Oman.
