Jebel Akhdar Trail - Full Day Safari

Duration: Half Day

jebel akhdar trail - full day safari

The country of Oman, officially the Sultanate of Oman, is located in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, and bordered by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. A country renowned for its beautiful contrasting landscapes, discover vast deserts, rolling plains, dramatic mountains and sandy beaches on your journey. Full of Middle Eastern treasures, Oman is a fascinating country to explore and an increasingly popular holiday destination.

This full day safari will take you to the beautiful Jebel Al Akhdar mountain range, meaning “the green mountain”. Departing form Muscat, the capital and largest city of Oman, you will make your way to the ancient market town of Nizwa, one of the oldest cities in Oman. Here you will see the spectacular Nizwa Fort with its famous round tower, built in the 17th century to protect the busy crossroads on the caravan routes.

You will also get the chance to shop for handicraft souvenirs and other wonderful produce in the Nizwa Souk, one of the biggest marketplaces in Oman besides Muttrah in Muscat. You will then continue onwards to the pretty oasis village of Birkat Al Mauz, located at the foothills of Jebel Al Akhdar mountain. Enjoy a walk through the lush green date plantations before proceeding to Wadi Al Madeen, where your entry permit must be shown.

A 36 km winding road will then lead you to Jebel Al Akhdar, the green jewel of the Al Hajjar mountain range. This is one of the most beautiful and unique spots in the Arabian Peninsula. The highest point, Jabal Shams, meaning “the mountain of the sun”, is about 3,000 meters (around 9,800 feet) high. It is also the highest peak in Oman and the whole of eastern Arabia. Al Jebel Al Akhdar is famous for its fruit orchards, which are typically laid out like terraces along the slopes of the mountains.

The cooler climate is a welcome change to the heat in the cities, and it enables all sorts of fresh and exotic fruits to grow here, including pomegranates, peaches, apricot, figs, grapes, apples, pears and plums, as well as almonds and walnuts. The terraces are endowed with natural springs and traditional waterways known as aflaj. Combined with the high altitude, cool climate and the relatively high rainfall compared to the rest of Oman, much of the mountain landscape is lush and green, hence its name.

The terraced villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib and Al Ain dot the mountain landscape and overlook awe-inspiring views of dramatic peaks, gorges and wadis (valleys). The roses of Jabal Al Akhdar fill the air with their wonderful sweet fragrance during full bloom in March and April. The area is renowned for its traditional rose water extraction, which is distilled in the homes of the villagers. This tour is an excellent way to cool down from the city heat and experience Oman’s fascinating rural life in a spectacular setting.

You will stop for lunch at the Jebel Akhdar hotel. It is advisable to wear light comfortable clothing and walking shoes. (Permits require a day to process.)
