Oman's Grand Canyon - Full Day Safari

Duration: Full Day

oman's grand canyon - full day safari

Explore Oman’s beautiful rural landscapes and experience the wonderful local culture on this day safari to Jebel Akhdar, where you will discover ancient mountain villages, deep wadis (gorges) and dramatic peaks.

Your first stop of the day will be the picturesque market town of Nizwa. Once Oman’s capital during the sixth and seventh centuries, it is one of the oldest cities in the country. Enjoy shopping and haggling in the lively Nizwa Souq, one of the biggest and most important markets in the country besides Muttrah in Muscat.

Renowned for its antiques and silver jewellery, you will find a fascinating range of souvenirs to take home, including local handicrafts, pottery, silk, leather goods, intricately hand-carved Khanjars (curved daggers), as well as produce such as spices, meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and Halwa, a traditional Omani dessert made from sugar and spices, and flavoured with almonds or sesame seeds. Visitors can watch local artisans as they sit and craft their beautiful items, and if you visit on a Friday you can observe some of the local customs during the busy livestock market, when the local farmers bring their cows, goats and sheep to auction.

Before we leave this fascinating town, enjoy a brief photo stop at the magnificent Nizwu Fort, with its famous round tower. Built in the 17th century to protect the busy crossroads on the caravan routes, it is one of the oldest and largest forts in Oman.

We then continue onwards to Jebel Akhdar Mountain, the green jewel of the Al Hajjar mountain range. Meaning “Green Mountain”, this is one of the most beautiful spots in the Arabian Peninsula, renowned for its date palm groves, terraced fruit orchards, wadis (valleys) and ancient mountain villages. Here you will visit Wadi Nakher, located at the bottom of Oman’s deepest canyon, known as “Oman’s Grand Canyon”. This spectacular gorge is a captivating site.

You will also visit Misfah, a pretty mountain village surrounded by greenery and date palms. Here you will find original stone dwellings that date back to over 400 years. En-route to Jebel Shams, the highest peak of Jebel Akhdar, we will also stop at the village of Ghul, which lies within the canyon itself, and see the abandoned crumbling Persian ruins. When we reach Jebel Shams, meaning “Mountain of the Sun”, breathe in the fresh mountain air and enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the rugged landscape from Oman’s highest peak.

A welcome change from the city heat, a tour to the breathtaking Jebel Akhdar will certainly be one of the highlights of your holiday in Oman.
