If you think Abu Dhabi’s vast desert is just endless sand with nothing of interest, think again! Breathtaking dunes, spectacular views, traditional culture, oases and wildlife all combine with modern amenities and thrilling activities to make a trip to the desert simply unmissable.
An overnight stay at a desert camp is really the only way to truly experience everything this unique, dynamic and intriguing landscape has to offer. An overnight stay offers the opportunity to dine on traditional food under the stars, and to enjoy the smouldering sunsets and glorious sunrises that are unique to the desert.
At the heart of the Al Khatem desert you will find the air-conditioned comfort of the luxurious Arabian Nights Village, carefully designed to evoke the atmosphere and style of traditional Bedouin residences, whilst offering modern tourist comforts including a swimming pool and restaurant serving fine Arabic cuisine.
Winter sports may be the last thing you would think about on a trip to Abu Dhabi’s desert, but the largest sand dunes in the world make Liwa Oasis a paradise for sand skiers. Enjoy the exhilarating runs down hundreds of metres of crisp red sand, as you demonstrate your stylish moves on the slopes. Although Liwa Oasis, on the edge of the Empty Quarter, is definitely ski central, there are gentler slopes all across the desert for beginners and novices who are not quite ready to join the expert skiers.
There are also plenty of other thrilling and high-adrenaline activities popular in Abu Dhabi’s deserts, including sand dune bashing and quad biking – all taking advantage of the dynamic and dramatic scale of the desert’s dunes and valleys.
Visitors hoping to be awed by vast stretches of uninterrupted desert sand will not be disappointed, however. Despite all the fun to be had in the desert, the incredible, silent and ever-shifting landscape of dunes and valleys made famous by the writings of British explorer Wilfred Thesiger is still there, in all its glorious wonder. The Empty Quarter, or Rub Al Khali, is in fact the largest continuous sand mass on the planet – and it really has to be seen to be believed.
