Abu Dhabi for couples

Abu Dhabi is without doubt one of the world's top luxury holiday destinations - it has some of the best hotels on the planet, numerous high-end shopping malls and plenty of other wonderful attractions. If you're planning a romantic escape for two, this emirate is an excellent choice.

Stay in one of the many decadent hotels and enjoy discovering every part of the city and surrounding area - from the boutique stores and traditional souks to the stunning Corniche beach and the vast wilderness of the desert.

If you and your partner love indulging in some retail therapy while you're travelling then a shopping holiday in Abu Dhabi will be right up your street. Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall and Khalidiyah Mall are just a few of the places you can splash some cash, with these centres also boasting facilities like cinemas, restaurants and even ice rinks.

Romantic attractions in Abu Dhabi

While Abu Dhabi might be best known for its impressive skyscrapers, there are plenty of peaceful, romantic spots to be discovered here too. One of the best places for a romantic stroll is along the Corniche promenade, which runs along the back of the city's beach. You can wander around while looking out over the sea on one side and at the glittering towers of the city on the other - a particularly magical place to come at sunset and in the early evening.

Just off the coast there are several islands that are just perfect for day trips for couples - or even to stay on during your holiday. Saadiyat Island is an especially good choice for culture-loving pairs, as it is home to numerous museums and galleries, including the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

There's also the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club - the region's only ocean-side course - and various luxury hotels where you can look forward to being pampered and having everything you need on hand.

If you and your partner enjoy active holidays, you may want to base yourselves on Yas Island instead. Here you'll find Yas Marina - home to a host of luxury yachts - Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, one of the UAE's most exciting theme parks.

Eating out in Abu Dhabi

An essential component of any romantic break is eating out at sumptuous and exclusive restaurants - and Abu Dhabi certainly has plenty of these. What makes it such a wonderful place for dining is the wide variety of cuisines on offer, with an abundance of delicious local dishes to sample, as well as French, Asian, Mexican, English and Lebanese restaurants to name just a few.

For outstanding seafood, head to Sayad at the upmarket Emirates Palace hotel or Finz, which not only serves up tasty meals but also boasts a wonderful waterfront location. There are several establishments specialising in Lebanese cooking in Abu Dhabi, including Lebanese Flower and Automatic Restaurant, while if you want a taste of authentic Emirati cuisine the best place to visit is Al Dhafra in the Abu Dhabi Heritage Village.

There are also plenty of charming cafes where you can pick up a snack and a cup of coffee while you're out and about - a favourite spot for locals is Hediard, the Abu Dhabi branch of the French patisserie and chocolatier chain, which is great for a sweet treat in the afternoon.

Add a stop-off in Abu Dhabi

If you are planning a trip to an Indian Ocean destination - like the Seychelles, Maldives, Sri Lanka or Mauritius - then you may want to break up your long journey with a few days in Abu Dhabi. The emirate is ideally placed between the UK and the Indian Ocean, making it a convenient stop-off and breaking up the long journey into two shorter, much more manageable flights.

What's more, you'll have the chance to enjoy some of its marvellous attractions, getting your holiday off to a fantastic start or winding up your break in true style. Should you want longer than just a couple of days to discover Abu Dhabi, consider booking a multi-centre holiday that gives you a little longer here, as well as plenty of time to enjoy the attractions in whichever Indian Ocean paradise you're jetting off to.
