Baths of Aphrodite
Duration: Half Day
Many people decide to holiday in Cyprus because of its warm, sunny climate and golden beaches, but there is so much more to discover. Steeped in history, culture and legends of mythical gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece, Cyprus is one of the most intriguing and beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
If you want to uncover some of the historical facts and mythical tales, there are many places to explore around the island, ranging from mountains and famous landmarks to important architectural sites and impressive ruins. The Five Finger Mountain, the Bronze Age Site of Enkomi-Alasia and the hidden treasures of Hilarian Castle are just some of the most exciting legendary sites in northern Cyprus, while the southwest coast of the island boasts the Rocks of Aphrodite in Paphos.
This fascinating tour will take you to the famous Baths of Aphrodite, where you can learn more about this Greek goddess of love and beauty. The name Aphrodite actually means “foam arisen”. It was around 1200 BC when the mythical Greek goddess Aphrodite rose from the foamy waves at her legendary birthplace − Petra tou Romiou (the Rock of the Greek). This large, jagged rock stands majestically on Paphos’ stunning coastline, which is blessed with beautiful beaches and clear turquoise waters.
Legend has it that this beautiful goddess used to bathe every day in a small shallow pool north of Paphos, on the Akamas Peninsula, which is now famously known as the Baths of Aphrodite. The waters here were believed to have had special rejuvenating powers, and swimming here would guarantee eternal youth and beauty. It is said that Aphrodite could make any man fall in love with her, just by them laying their eyes on her, so now we know why.
The natural grotto is surrounded by ferns and shaded by a fig tree, and the water to the pool is supplied by a natural spring. This picturesque area is situated close to the small fishing village of Latchi and can be reached by walking along the nature trails from Akamas. The Aphrodite Trail is one of the highlights of the area. Starting just above the Baths, it follows the mythical route taken by Aphrodite and her lover Adonis. This walk is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Cyprus, offering breathtaking views across blue lagoons to Cape Arnaoutis at the tip of Akamas peninsula.
Afterwards, you can enjoy free time for swimming, sunbathing or relaxing on the harbour waterfront in Latchi. This tour is a wonderful way to combine the natural beauty of Cyprus’ coastline with romantic island legends.
